Baleares Islands 1994 10 Ecu

This is not a coin issued by an official government, but merely a token or medallic issue, issued solely for collectors. The ecu was introduced in 1979 as the forerunner of the euro. When the euro was introduced in 1999, the value was 1 euro = 1 ecu (european currency unit).
Many countries have issued official medals in ecu, with Belgium being the only country to issue those ecu-coins as legal tender coins (NCLT).
Spain also has issued a lot of official ecu-medals, according to my Krause 27th edition (2000). This medal was not icluded in the official strikes, so I suppose it is a private issue. The Balearic Islands are a Spanish province within the region of Catalonia. Palma de Mallorca is the capital.
