Hi I am only new to this. Today I found a double headed 2007 Aus 5c piece in circulation. I have read the other posts and my coin seems to meet all the suggested criteria. No visable joins or seams, sound the same as several other 5c coins and weighs 3gms (on the kitchen scales)the sames as a normal 5c coin.
Has anyone been looking at the auction prices for these lately. I have just found by going to one of the links in a post two NSW numismatic dealers specialising in Aust Decimal currency.
I am interested about the value of my coin that has one or two markes on the edge. It is in as good condition as "neild" with the same 180 deg rotation of the head.
Can any one give me some ideas or help

Sounds real to me, congrats on finding one. No idea on the prices they've been achieving but I am sure someone will be along to help you out.

There have been a number of different double headed (or double tailed) coins minted in Australia. I know of two pennies (dated 1957) from the Perth Mint that sold several years ago. Also a number of 1970s dated coins have come to market (probably a shady employee at the mint then). If double headers are offered at UNC grade then possibly a mint employee is making some extra money; in this case there seem to be a number of people claiming to find them in circulation; so unless it is some sort of grand conspiracy involving all these people (not likely) then the release was accidental.

Mints do make mistakes and that aspect of the hobby with varieties and errors is what makes modern issues exciting to me Too many clowns on auction sites like eBay spoil it

I got the chance to view some of IAG's auction lots at the Brisbane ANDA show over the weekend. There's a 2007 double head 5c that appears genuine. Some of their other decimal errors are post mint damage and not described as such.

Just a quick reply; was out tonight and was talking about coins, and a friend of mine piped up and said his friend had recently found a double headed 2007 5c piece (found in Western Sydney change).

Well it looks like the double headed 2007 5c piece is real! On page 16 of this months Coin and Banknote magazine they mention this coin and also that it has a 180 degrees rotation. At present there are only about 9 of these coins known. The latest find in circulation is in near mint condition which suggests the delicious possibility that these coins are still being released by the Mint. Pardon me while I go and noodle some 5c pieces

Hi MobOfRoos, The previous info about an auction seemed to confirm that they are real. I have been checking both sides of the 5c coins I have been noodling, but no double headed ones yet - not all that surprising really :) I am curious about you saying that there is a possibility that "these coins are still being released by the Mint" If they are 2007 coins, then the mint would not be releasing them any more, as they have released 2008, 2009 and 2010 5 cent coins. Do you mean that there may be other years as well?

Hi ozcoins,
They are all 2007. My understanding is that once coins are minted they are held in storage until they are distributed for circulation at a later date. Presumably there could still be some 2007 coins held in storage. At least that is what the article was implying

Hi MobOfRoos, Thanks for the clarification. I have looked in a couple of newsagents, and have not see the magazine. I'll have to keep looking.
