Hey guys,
At first, it looked as though someone may have dipped it part way into some type of chemical solution but I ruled this out by measuring the size of the lighter area on both sides of the coin. The lightened area on the front is smaller than on the back. Also, where the two colors meet on the edge of the coin, they appear to swirl/blend together. Any ideas?

I think your first hunch is correct, something has stripped the oxidation off the copper surface leaving one area lighter than the other. It didn't happen too recently though since the lighter area is already mostly retoned. Measuring the size doesn't prove much because the areas are quite similar in size and whatever stripped the oxidation would not necessarily have to act in a symmetrical manner. Improper mixing of the copper alloy takes on a completely different look- http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...ms=woodgrain

Looks like it may have been the star of some infomercial for a cleaning solution.
