A dear friend of mine had been telling me about all the coins he has. He retired about 5 years ago, he's 72 now. He is definately just a hoarder and not a collector. I finally went over to his house today to see the hoard and OMG. There was 5 gallon water bottles and other containers that all had coins in them. It was all separated by cent, nickel, dime, quarter, etc.

The story is each day when he came home from work, he'd toss his change into these various containers, keeping each denomination separate. He said he'd been doing it 20 or 30 years without ever cashing in. Now he's at the point where he just wants to get rid of it so....of course....I said NO PROBLEM. For the job of removal and checking, I can keep anything I want (of low numismatic value) and if I find an error of value, that will obviously be his.

I could only carry some of the stuff out from his house today...it's just too heavy. I broke down some of the bigger containers into bags. I started with the Lincolns of course! It's an absolute JACK POT of 80-90's red, BU cents and about 40% copper so far. Man, this is REALLY helping me with my BU roll set. After just about an hour I pulled about 100 blazing red gem Zincolns from this first container.

Now, I don't collect quarters, dimes or nickels. The ONLY thing I'm searching for in that stuff is silver. A quick scan showed, just like the cents, lots of BU 80-90's coins. Any of you collectors interested in that stuff? Obviously, it will be all unsearched except for silver. There's so much I'm a bit overwhelmed!

So far I've just planned on dumping everything I don't want at the bank coin counter.

There are alot of us on this forum who collect early Jeffersons. I keep anything 1958 on back. It would be interesting to see what is in your nickel jar in early Jeffies.

I'd totally take the leftovers off of your hands...

In all honesty, I wish I had friends like those... my friends are much more interested in spending them.

1982 and 1983 BU coins have a nice premium, especially the quarters.

IHC?

And chocolate coins. If I ever get past that one problem, I'll collect them, too.

You should put together mixed b.u. rolls of the different denominations and come up with roll prices. I'd be interested in several quarter rolls.

Looks like Christmas came early for you. Glad you came into this stuff, besides the nice varieties you've found recently.

Wow...lots of responses! I will keep you guys in mind once I get a handle on all this stuff. For now looking at the Lincolns is my priority...of course, LOL.

I tested a different container of cents tonight (a big glass bottle) and it's amazing. The latest date is 1986 in this jar. About 25-30% copper and lots and lots of BU early 80's cents. It had several 1972's too, I like looking for the DDO's. Every time I pour out a small pile to work on I'm oooooohhh and ahhhhhhh over the BU Zincolns. LOL After seaching all those boxes and bags of the past I almost feel I wasted my time. These BU Lincolns and nice copper have me spoiled! This stuff is a searchers delight.

I can't wait to get to the other containers. He said he would just fill a container and then start on a new one. So each container must represent a certain period in time. Based on the two containers I've examined thus far, one of them goes to 1986 and the other one to 1996.

FUN FUN FUN!
