What makes something a "first day of issue" coin (other than the obvious). I have seen some graded (PCGS)and labelled as "first day of issue". Most of them were presidential dollar coins that I saw in a coin shop and some online. Is there anything really different about the coin or any premium or just a way of making something seem more important or something. Just curious. Thanks
Yeah, it's not even really a early strike quality coin either, necessarily. Because you don't know at what stage of the total minting number, the particular coin was minted. And theoretically, you can get "First Strike" coins throughout the year, every time a new die is used, until the "allotment" has been reached. So, that being said, the "First Day of Issue" coins are really nothing but a label saying that these are available on the first day of sale....but couldn't possibly guarantee that these are, in any way, "first strike" coins. That could only be determined by the quality in examining each coin.
"Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday." John Wayne
First strikes, First Day of Issue...Buy the coin not the holder. A MS-69 or 70 or whatever is still a MS-69 or 70 or whatever regardless of it being "labeled" first anything. IMHO, John1
