What's the deal with the 1911D two and half dollar gold coin?
Sometime you can see the mint mark and sometime you can't...I have a
1911 and wonder if it might have a D mint mark....

Both the quarter and half eagle Indian designs by Bela Lyon Pratt have an issue with weak mintmarks. The combination of the no-rim design and the position of the mintmark very close to the edge means the MM is usually weakly struck. They may appear very mushy, hence the occasional inquiry about whether a 1909-D half eagle is really the more valuable 1909-O coin. The mintmark on my 1913-S half eagle is an indistinct blob, but can still be made out as an "S".

If you have the 1911-D coin you should be able to see at least a blob of a mintmark. I have never heard of this coin having the mintmark totally absent.

however, the D is commonly weak on the '11D.

Or so I have been told.

I have poor coin photo skills...but under the magnifier I see the faint outline
of the D mint mark. Will send it for TPG and get authentication.
