Just before dinner ... I had the EBay auction on my watch list for 6 days. The coin had some low bids that you'd expect for a worn 1878 7TF. A couple of bidders going back and forth in the $10-20 range. Set my snipe for $72.75 (thought that would do it and no one else knew what the coin was). Just as I was about to click the price went to $77 ... oh crud, no time to adjust! Bummer. That's what the 1878 7TF VAM 189 went for ... congrats to the winner. It's not a coin that many look for and I thought I was the only one in the world who knew what it was ... when am I going to learn! To those who don't know the VAM 189 is the only 7TF coin with re-engraved tailfeathers and is very rare. This is the first one I've spotted in two years of looking.

Then, four hours later I won another 1880-O VAM 49 in at least XF (that makes three). So the night wasn't a total loss.

I've about given up on 1878's. They don't talk about it, even on VAMworld, but there are some knowledgeable and deeply committed VAMmers looking at every single 1878 auction on Ebay. They're on both coasts, and you're unlikely to scoop them without some real luck. In addition, starting prices on 1878's have gone through the roof in the last few years.

The only way to do it these days is to snag Buy It Nows as soon as they're listed. My last two purchases have been Buy It Nows, both within hours of their initial listing.

I own Australian coins, too.
