I'm new to "serious" coin collecting and have no experience grading coins. I've been doing an inventory of my father's collection, which consists mainly of well-used coins. But I came across an 1856 Large Cent that is quite nice.
Using the 2010 Red Book's criteria and looking at the examples on the Photograde iPhone app, I'm thinking this coin would grade somewhere between XF and AU. I'd appreciate the opinions of more experienced and knowledgeable eyes.

I would say you are right on. excellent detail but doesnt seem to have much luster. XF+ to XF-45 in grade

XF45 was my first instinct, but after looking at it a second time, I will say AU50. Nice coin and nice pics! BTW, Welcome to the CCF!

XF+. So much detail, only slight wear on "Liberty." Great coin.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm pleased that I was "in the ballpark" with my opinion/guess of the coin's grade. There a noticeable amount of dirt on the reverse side around the lettering. (Particularly around the T & A of STATES.) Do I just leave it exactly as is? Or can I do something to remove it without reducing the value/grade of the coin?

I would leave it as it is. There is no benefit to removing something from a coin unless it is verdigris, PVC, or something that seriously inhibits eye appeal. Leaving the dirt where it is will appeal to more collectors if you sell it, since it attests to originality.
