I'm not sure if that is considered a cud, or just a die crack or maybe a break. Haven't quite seen one like that before.

Great detail photo Peaceman ......

It would be helpful if you showed a photo of the entire coin .... and the reverse opposite of the area in question.

CUD leave a weakness in strike on the opposite side of the coin ..... and we can't see or judge any of this from your lovely but isolated detailed photo.

That said ..... this is some kind of error but unlike any CUD I've seen ..... looks more like a die break that might eventually become a CUD when that part falls off.

Heck ..... you might have a rare and desirable CUD precursor.

I have several of these. This is a die crack. There is a known cud for this date at this location listed in the Kennedy Half book by James Wiles but the coin you have is like all of the ones I have found so far and is not a cud yet. Nice find.

Does it have a designation? I know Peace $ errors pretty well, we classify them as "Vams", IE, a Vam 1a. Any value here?

It is listed in the book as cud-001 with the description of a die crack thru the T. On the next page it has cud-002 which is the actual cud with the piece missing. Both have an estimated value of $20 in EF-AU. The copyright is 2002. I think the value is high. I have been looking for these for the past several years and I have an estimated 6-8 pieces all with the die crack only. In comparison I have found 2 1974-D DDO's. So they are uncommon but not rare. From what I have found the cud is rare.

Thanks. I think I need to buy a book... Which one is best for varieties, the one mentioned above?

I use the one above along with Treasure Hunting Franklin and Kennedy Half Dollar Doubled Dies by Flynn and Wexler. The second book only lists doubled dies.
