I know there were some issues with 5 cent coins becoming discoloured as a result of the change in alloy in 1982. I have a couple of 1982 PL sets and I notice that the nickels are now definitively yellow. Is this typical for the year? Any opinions?

Yes. You will also notice this in the 1982 proof sets.
