Congrats! Nice coin! I've heard a lot about this variety, but I've never understood what the 'bar' is?

The "bar" is the die break that runs just above the dot (you can see it in the picture on the right). It joins the two ribbons together.
Interestingly, the 1936 dime also has a die break joining the ribbons in the same place. I have the MS64 ICCS one but ICCS doesn't label it, although CCCS does.
They're interesting varieties, because both the 1936 and the 1936 dot quarters, can have the die break in the same place. However the 1936 dot-bar is extremely rare.
Canadian Coin News Trends lists the 1936 dot-bar, ICCS recognizes it, but Charlton doesn't list it.

Is a die break truly a variety? I would consider it to be a minor error. I mean, if you follow your principle of die breaks as a variety to its logical conclusion, then you would go mad trying to collect 1859 1-cent coins, for example.

Bought a raw one,VG,for $50 at a coin show in Edmonton a couple of years ago
Had to have it for completeness' sake
I think most collectors agree with SPP,that it's a minor error,as trends pricing puts it far lower in value than such true varieties as the 1871OBV1,even though the latter is more common.

Well yes, most of the popular varieties ARE errors.
Thinking 1859 cent DP1-5, 1859 TP1, hub doubled 1881 and 1882, 1858/1558 dime, 1947 dot nickel - quarter - dollar, 1964 EWL, 1967 double struck 50c and $1, 1967 diving goose $1...
and a lot of these varieties (sorry, errors)...fetch thousands of dollars in their highest condition, dont they? ;)

"Trends pricing" reflects value of the last known transactions, not the relative "rarity" or "desirability" of a coin.

My 1936 dot-bar ICCS EF40 has sold :)...
I now own a PCGS AU53 dot-bar from Heritage Auctions, and someone has informed me they know of one or two that exist, in MS

It sold for $800...I wanted more for it, but since obtaining an unlabeled AU53 for $500, I got soft and let it go...
