So I have this French token here. I believe the words on the front translate to "monkey money". It is plastic and feels like one of those play money tokens. But this also looks like a trade token on the back. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

Never seen one in plastic before, they usually come as a brass shell card. The Aux Glaces are often described as bordello tokens, but probably without any proof. Certainly one or two of these establishments made use of shell cards but not as widely as reported.

Well, there is a nude, um, "angel" on the front so that makes some sense.

It's a copy of the late C19th 20 franc coin, the Gold Angel

I doubt it's plastic, just feels that way because it's hollow and therefore very lightweight. And yes, as mentioned above it is a brothel token. This is one of several types from the late 1800's and early 1900's. They are pretty common. There is also a token with nearly identical design, but having anothe brothel's name and address on it.

It is interesting because if I drop it there is definitely not a metal sound, more like a thud like if you drop a plastic coin. Prior to now I had not heard of a brass shell card but it would make sense if something is inside which would cause the metallic sound to be deadened. This token could easily be bent seven ways to Sunday - likely similar to the "angel" depicted. But I digress .. thanks for the help and I definitely learned something!

Isn't "Aux Glaces" an "ice cream shop"? I have a couple of these and always figured they were tokens good for 25 centimes toward a more innocent confection.
