I just wanted to share this Half Dime. It is the "9 over so called 8", but a lot of folks think it is a 6 instead of a 8. Whichever it is, I love it, it is so dramatic.

PCGS list the variety as - "1849/6 9 0ver widely placed 6"

Kinda boggles my mind that someone would collect these...send it in for grading and a bean and still not really know that a variety is sitting right in front of them?
Beautiful pick!
Very happy for you!

Yeah, I can't figure that out myself.

A beauty MS65+ CAC example sold in August of 2023 for $5040 (link below) My example would be 1/1 in MS64+. Grade wise and Variety.

I'm a little bit late for the discussion, so, let's open this back up.

1. Great looking Half Dime!

2. It is a V-1 (Valentine 1) notice the first three digits almost touch the bottom of the rock? It is an overdate as well, just harder to see.

3. PCGS has had the varieties messed up on this date for many years, and this one is still wrong. NGC does not even have an image in Variety Plus for V-1.

PCGS does show a V-1 (like the OP's coin) as the top plate coin (which is incorrect) on the 9 over wide placed 6 page, but notice the the next two coin images...the dates are quite a bit further than the bottom of the rock.

To make matters worse, CAC Grading calls this variety "9 over so called 8" FS-303 as well.
