In late May, I described finding three 40% silver Kennedy half dollars in four customer-wrapped rolls that I purchased at a credit union while visiting Cape Cod. Yesterday I did even better there. One of the three tellers told me that she had 20 loose half dollars I customer had recently cashed. As she counted them for me, I noticed several silver coins and heard the distinct sound they make when they hit another coin. While she was handing them to me, a different teller piped up: "I heard the sound of silver!" I went to her and showed the edges of the coins I had just purchased. She was quite good -- she correctly identified the dark gray edges of two silver half dollars as well as the other two silver coins. She explained that she knows about silver coins and tries to purchase the ones that customers bring to her. As a courtesy, I also showed the silver coins to the teller who sold them to me -- but she didn't seem to be interested in learning about them.

Pickd up these 5 rolls the other day. The ones in top row have silver edges. I gues they are 40%. even though these are circulated they are really nice looking proofs. My pictures not the best.

Fantastic! The proofs, if silver and 1992-date, should be 90%. 1976-S is the only 40% silver proof.

It's always nice to identify a new source of silver coins. Today I called several banks in a town I previously didn't include on my search list that is adjacent to where one of my "dump" banks is located. Tellers at four banks told me they each had a few dollars in loose halves. I visited them after dumping two boxes of coins that I'd already searched. The teller at the first bank had 10 half dollars. Looking at their edges, I could tell that some of the coins sitting in his tray contained silver. Sure enough -- five of the 10 coins were 40% silver Kennedy half dollars, and the sixth one contained 90% silver. After I purchased these coins, the teller told me the bank also had two boxes of rolled half dollars. When he brought them from the vault, I could tell they already had been search by another CRH. I wonder if that collector cashed them while the loose silver coins were sitting in the teller's tray?

Gotta love out-in-the-open teller trays where they can be visually evaluated...
