As can be deduced from my forum name here on CCF, I enjoy collecting commemorative coins. While the bulk of my collection is comprised of US coins, I also enjoy collecting certain World coins. I thought it would be interesting to see what World coins folks have that highlight a direct tie-in to a shared history with the US. It's an area that I actively collect; I've posted a few times about them here on CCF (One example: 1987 US-Morocco Friendship Bicentennial. To kick things off, here's a Republic of France coin from 2003 that commemorates the 200th anniversary of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase - a seminal event in US history that took place under the Thomas Jefferson presidency. I look forward to seeing what others have to share! Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

@TNG: Great add! The MacArthur coins were the first coins issued by the newly-independent Republic of the Philippines. They were designed by Laura Gardin Fraser; the designs are in shallow relief.

My well went dry already. Looking around I cannot find any other coins in my collection. My two coin 1998 Ladies Of Freedom set is the closest connection to this thread I can get but there is no US connection on the single Britannia 2 pound coin except for packaging and my two coin Leif Erickson mentions America on the 2000 Iceland 1000 kronur but that would have nothing with the United States in his time.

Here's an interesting release from the Netherlands back in 2009 - it commemorates the country's ties to Manhattan/early New York. If you'd like to learn more about the coin, check out my previous post on it: 2009 Henry Hudson and Manhattan Island.

Quote: Statue of Liberty on the 1986 French silver 100-franc coin: Are we sure it is not her diminutive twin located on Īle aux Cygnes? I know, the dates would indicate otherwise. Our statue was erected in 1886, theirs in 1889.
