I wanted to create this thread for a while now, in order to serve an important purpose. Not all, or many of us for that matter have access to the counterfeit reporting forum. I wanted to create this thread so we can have an open image library of fakes so that us, the general populous, have access to information to better educate ourselves.

Rules:

*The coin cannot be stamped copy, coins advertisted or marked as reproductions don't count either.
*Once you're posted the image, in the same reply explain what identifying characteristics lead to the conculsion it was not authentic.
*Repeat posts are allowed, however, if Person A posts a fake 1909-S VDB, person B is allowed to as well. If person A finds a second fake 1909-S VDB, they are welcome to post it.
*All denominations and nationalities of coinage are welcome.
*Discussion is welcome. The purpose is to educate, so please ask away.
*Altered coins are welcome as well, ie added mint marks, altered dates, removed devices, ect. are wanted as well.

That's all. I look forward to seeing what material all of you have. I hope this can help everyone learn.

Is there any concern that if one posts a counterfeit, that they may get a knock on their door?

No joecoin lol, you are allowed to buy them and show them as long as you state they are counterfeit. Some members actively collected fakes before, as long as you don't try to pass them off as real you are perfectally fine.

The nickel-brass circular pound coins issued by the UK from 1983 to 2016 were extensively forged. At one point, it was estimated that about 3% of those in circulation were fake.

Here are some fakes I got in change:

This 1990 coin has the correct combination of obverse and reverse, but is poorly struck and the edge inscription is a nonsensical mixture of the Scottish coin's 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit' and the English coin's 'Decus Et Tutamen'.

Post-Your-Counterfeit-Coins-Here-Educational-Thread
This 1995 coin looks quite good but it has the Scottish lion reverse which was only used on official coins in 1994 and 1999! Genuine 1995 coins have a Northern Ireland symbol (a Celtic Cross) on the reverse.

Post-Your-Counterfeit-Coins-Here-Educational-Thread
This 1994 coin has the English Three Lions reverse used on genuine coins in 1997 and 1992. Genuine 1994 pound coins have the Scottish Lion as on the above coin!

They are great examples NumisRob! I never heard about that issue. Those aren't too convincing either. They all have mushy details, poor strikes, and the lettering looks off as well. Thanks for your contribution!

Counterfeit of Riga's schilling of ruler Sigismund III Vasa of Poland. First part of 17 century. Copper instead of silver, unreadable legend.

Neat example, you'd think they would at least make it out of the right coloured metal

The bimetallic £2 coin, introduced in 1997, is the UK's highest value circulating coin, worth a bit more than $2.

Naturally it has attracted attention from forgers. Most fakes are magnetic (unlike the genuine coins) and are made of a single metal, with either the centre or outer section painted or gilded to make the coin appear bimetallic.

These are the only three fake £2 coins that I've found in circulation:

Post-Your-Counterfeit-Coins-Here-Educational-Thread
The date on this 2011 £2 coin is too wide, and details all over the coin are a bit wrong, but it's still a fairly good copy.

Post-Your-Counterfeit-Coins-Here-Educational-Thread
The colours of this coin are completely off and the inner core looks as if it's made from silver foil. The hologram in the centre of the reverse is wrong.

Post-Your-Counterfeit-Coins-Here-Educational-Thread
Very crude with no details on Queen's portrait or hologram!

Genuine 2011 £2 coin for comparison:

Just for fun, here is another 1909-S VDB glued on mint mark and a really, really horrible Chinese fake 1909 VDB.
