At this point, it's not about the 17 years of unconditional love we gave to each other, it's about her quality of life and dignity. It was a heart breaking decision but our vet, Dr. Z, was certain we made the right choice with his advice as well. About a month ago, she started getting fluid buildup on each side of her lungs from what Dr suspected was a mass that would not let it pass out but rather build up. He put her on Lasix and a steroid to hopefully help shrink the tumor. After draining the fluid out of her and in about 2 weeks, the fluid was back and her breathing once again became labored. It was clear the medicine was not working. He told us we can keep draining the fluid but at this point, he advised it would be best to let her at peace. We are going to miss her. I know one day we will be together again! Lynxsy - 2008-2025 swcoin.ecrater.com

My most sincere condolences on the loss of your family member, vermontensium. Lynxsy looks like she was a fine Furmaster.

Thanks Spence. Funny, I am sitting out on our balcony and all of a sudden, a wind gust and the smell of fish. One of her favorites. Her spirit will be with us I am sure. I will love her until my last breath.

oh man, I can sympathize with you there, v. sorry to hear that. i had adopted a larger-than-usual male orange tabby (i called him Big Kitty) off the street in 2004/5. eventually he had the same issue (fluid build-up around the heart and lungs). he wasn't around for very long, but he lived like a king in his final year... plenty of food & water & treats & catnip, a clean, dry, bugless place to sleep & live, and plenty of company. our vet at the time told me the same thing as your vet told you and I had to let him go. it was important to me that he not suffer. his quality of life was priority. letting him go was tough. it always is. days after, I felt his presence on the wind and it broke me. it was the warmest rush of pure love and gratitude and it put me on my knees because I knew it was his thanks. Beautiful! Sounded like a wonderful companion.
I was about to jump in the shower tonight and she would always walk over to me, tail high in the air and say hello before I went in the shower. I broke down and dropped to my knees and put my arms around a spirit walking towards me. Man, talk about love and me crying.

Sorry to hear about your loss Dave, you can grow close to a pet over the years, 17 years is very old for any pet.
