I found this gold Canadian 1/10 ounce a few years ago. To my surprise it was a doubled die. I have always heard, trying to get the RMC to make an error coins in gold was near impossible, not to mention for it to escape the doors, Never. But when I found this one it blew my mind. I haven't been on site for a while so, if I can remember how to post some photos I will. They may come slow but they'll come.

A DDO is not an error, it is a variety. Being a variety, there would be many others like it out there.

I think that it looks like MD, but it could be Die Deterioration Doubling. Neither are "double die", and are varieties as stated above. The die just was a little loose in the holder since the die, when it struck the planchet, made a perfect strike just as the die was supposed to. However, in the micro or millisecond after the strike, as the die is raising from the strike, the die moves and leaves a shadow or shelf-like impression onto the coin. This "shadow" is not as high or raised as the initial contact and is quite common on many US denominations and years. Here's an accepted professional reference: https://doubleddie.com/144822.html

It does look like there is some notching on the doubling in '5 DOLLARS 2011'. Interesting that this hasn't been identified earlier. Perhaps it's because it is such a small coin and considered mostly a bullion coin, people weren't looking carefully. Nice find!

Thank you. These photos I have of this coin don't do it any justice. The coin is a class IV and it really has strong doubling.
