Liberty nickel S or D?

Look at the top picture and let me know what you think if this is an S or D, the mint mark is damaged. the second picture is a D from a coin in about the same condition.

I normal D doesnt point down in the corner it points to the side, I cant tell what this is it almost looks like an S.

Have you tried acetone to see if it comes off? could be a blob of silver glued on to make it appear as if a MM was there. Acetone won't hurt the coin, soak it and pick it with a wooden toothpick, If it's really on there, I'd go "S" MM.
