im not really the best at lending a helping shoulder, but what is wrong with tarnish? is the coin you're refering to a silver coin? I thought silver tarnish was good because it shows it hasnt been cleaned....

Sorry to hear that. My 2010 $3 Barn Owl gold-plated coin started showing tiny black spots within months of owning it.

Tarnishing on the square beaver is a known issue. The black foam material is the cause and was discontinued for the square coins that followed.
So, the Barn Owl should not tarnish if stored correctly.

Noticed same thing on mine, couple areas on both sides of the coin on the edges. Actually, not too distracting.

I removed the foam from the capsule.

pennymandave, the coin in question is a silver coin with gold plating so the tarnish gives it a very ugly appearance.

poboxw, black foam makes sense. I know of 2 people who have tarnished barn owl coins so I know I'm not alone, but still Grrrrrrrr...

Question:

Should we be concerned about the 50 cent gold coins too? The foam looks to be the same material.

Rest in Peace

You'd think all the mints and TPG would have figgered what container/mounting materials are safe by now.

Thank you for posting this, at least with your problem you have highlighted this issue to others, for whatever reasons, who did not know about this situation.....I have removed my black foam.

This forum is such a wealth of experience and information.

Well as a follow-up on this topic, I started a new one this morning, only to find out this topic already existed.

My 2010 Barn owl came from the mint without the black foam insert and I am still having the same spotting or pitting...interesting, any thoughts?

Could it also be because the coin is not pure silver or pure gold?

Coming from the inside capsule itself? I thought pure gold never oxidize like that. Can you post a scan?

This is my "Barn Owl" from 2010, which came from the RCM without the black foam used in earlier coins.
