At that price I would highly doubt that a 1923 1/2d would be included

I really doubt it comes with a 1923. Also before you go ahead and purchase such as set I would recommend considering putting the set together yourself. Its likely you will get a load of garbage worth a fraction of what you paid. If you do it yourself there is a few benefits; you pick the coins which appeal to you most, you pick the price, you get the sense of accomplishment when you finish it. Just my opinion but I wouldn't get near one of these downies sets. Maybe someone has purchased such a set from downies?

Why not just use $785 ( the same as the purchase price) as a budget to compile a half penny set. With careful purchasing and some luck you should be able to create a nice set of coins. As enworb so rightly states Quote: you get the sense of accomplishment when you finish it It is a lot more fun creating your own set anyway. The halfpenny's are one of the easiest of the pre decimal sets to put together and can be done on a modest budget

The rare dates are usually never included in such sets. Also, you are better off putting one together on your own - chances are you will come up with something much better for the money and it will be more fun. These sets are often grossly over-priced and not very high on quality, as they are made up of coins which the company struggles to get rid of.

The thing with buying such a set from a company like downies is the need to pay someone for the coins originally, they then need to pay someone to sort the dates and compile the set, they need to pay someone to put them on their website, they need to pay someone to package them an then they have to pay tax on top of the sale. The price will always be higher and you will almost always do better compiling your own set.

Downies says there are 58 coins, that will NOT includee the 1923 half penny. Agree with Trout, it will be more fun for you to collect them all by yourself and get much higher grade coins wiht that price.

I agree with everyone above for that price you can buy all the coins which are included for a lower price and I know because I used to buy from them in my early days of collecting and it wasnt until later that I realised they had charged so much more than what the coins are worth for example I was looking for a 1910 florin downies had it in average circulated g-vg for $95 while at KJC they had one aF for only $50! if you want to make a really great half penny set then you can save your money and buy from status international when they have their auctions because they tend to have them cheaper than book price by a good margin even including the buyers commision:) Please dont fall into the same trap I did you will end up really regreting it!

Quote: At that price I would highly doubt that a 1923 1/2d would be included I agree, but then why do Downies state that it is a " Complete PREMIUM Halfpenny Set" and no mention of "ex 1923". In my opinion this set must contain a 1923 half penny or Downies are guilty of false advertising.

Hi Demerest , yep 58 coins doesn't add up Here is some status auction results , there was a sale of complete set for $700 +commission, the 1923 was pretty ordinary tho with corrosion , halfpenny sets with out 1923 sell for around $100. http://www.statusint.com/result_coins.php?id=4 ask downies if a 1916 mule is included too

Many people have a different view of what "complete" constitutes in a coin set. I never consider any of my sets complete simply because there are better grade coins to be had and some coins are just so expensive they are way beyond a collectors means. I think the 1923 1/2d,1930 1d and the 1921/22 3d are rarely included is sales of coin sets due to their expense. If you can get a good set of 1/2d including a decent 1923 coin for less than a grand you will have done extremely well.
