Is there any word out on a 50th anniversray version of the kennedy half for 2014? It seems like a no-brainer, but I've heard nothing about the possibility. As much as I'd hate to say it, it'd be an awesome way to retire the coin, if that's where the half is headed. Otherwise a one-off 2014 anniverary version would be terrific and would satisfy a great many JFK fans out there, coin collector and non-collector alike. 50 of 72 in my 7070.

I think they will probably make a commemorative half dollar for it most likely. Like you said it's a no brainer. But as for the Kennedy half itself I don't see them making any change to it for the anniversary. But it would be awesome if they did, I would be all over that. I definitely plan on purchasing any commemorative coins they put out to go along with my Kennedy halves. Hope to hear something probably next year sometime about the possibilities.

I would think they would do a change in design for the special event. They also will likely have assorted Kennedy Mint pieces- I bet they have a Commemorative Half and dollar you buy from teh US Mint. The US Mint likes capitalize on these events.
Collect all US coins, especially Indian cents and Buffalo nickels

Is there any precedent for something like this besides the 1776-1976 coin series?

It's a mixed bag, not all the denominations received anything on their 50th Annie. The cent got a new reverse and the dime a W-mint marked piece, but nothing for the nickel in '88 or the quarter in '82. The halves are only made for collectors anyway, so I'm sure the Mint will of some way to increase profits in 2014. The Kennedy presidential dollar follows in 2015.

I guess you could say the Quarter got the washington Half dollar commem even though it didnt get anything on the quarter itself. Seems like they all would have had a special issue for their 50 year though

The dime got a "W" mint for its 50th.
It would be pretty neat to do the same with the half and then discontinue it. Let it go out with a bang instead of a whimper.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

A W mint would be awesome! And do you think they'll do a silver commemorative dollar and half dollar or just a half?

I think they already have 2 commemorative dollars for 2014 with the baseball hof and the civil rights act one. Not sure if they would want to add a 3rd unless they did some 50th half dollar set thing

For now [if anything comes] looks like Half MAY have something like The dime that got a "W" mint or cent got a new reverse for its 50th. More likely to see Kennedy 100th Birthday coin in 2017 Commemorative Coins are all set for 2013-2014... 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin & Girl Scouts USA Centennial Commemorative Coin for 2013; Wonder if Girl Scouts coin will have Boy on it, like Girl on 2010 Boy Scouts coin? Civil Rights Act of 1964 Commemorative Coin & National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin was just approved in the Senate for 2014.

Quote: Wonder if Girl Scouts coin will have Boy on it, like Girl on 2010 Boy Scouts coin? That would be politically incorrect lol. That one is the only one that doesnt get me excited for the upcoming commems, as a male just dont have any personal connection to it

Has it been THAT long since the original Kennedy was first issued? I can remember clearly when the '90% '64 was first issued, then all of the hoarding of them.

I hadn't thought of the W mintmark; that'd be cool. Still in favor a either a one-off reverse, but also the obverse can be fertile ground.
I'm kind of a fan of the forward-facing Jefferson on the nickel since 2006 and was mildly disappointed a forward-facing Lincoln couldn't be adopted for the 2010 redesign of the Lincoln Cent. Sacagawea is also facing us on the dollar. I thought it'd be nice to standardize our approach to the obverses of our coins and gradually do so when anniversaries gave us an excuse. I like the idea of our heroes and historical figures looking out and engaging us on our money - they do on our paper money. So, it could still be cool to do it for JFK - a fresh portrait looking out at us. I doubt it will happen, but, again, I like the idea.
If nothing's in the works legislatively for a 2014 design change or commemorative, as November 2013 draws near, it'll get fast-tracked, I bet.

I would have preferred them to have ended in 2011, but now I would like them to keep going until 2016. I like the idea of a W mint Half dollar. If I bought one, it would force me to also acquire the 1998-S Matte Finish (which I have thus far avoided doing).
