When my dad passed a couple of years back, my mother gave all of the kids several (10-12) rolls of wheats my dad had put together over the years. I was not a coin collector or enthusiast at the time, so I put them in a safe and never looked at them again.
Since I gradually eased into the hobby a few months ago, I've contemplated getting those and opening them up. I finally did last night. I had full rolls of 1919, 1929, 1941, 1944, 1947, 1950(2), 1957D. Mixed rolls of dates from 1919-1958, all mint marks. The 44 and 57D rolls were all in BU condition. There were BU condition coins from many other years as well, nothing especially rare, and certainly no DD 55's. I decided to just roll them back into their rolls that Dad had put them in, and put them away. It was fun looking through them though. Each roll has his handwriting on it, and were probably rolled 30-40 years ago according to Mom.
Mom still has a couple hundred rolls, and until last night I've never even thought to ask her to see them. I will tell her not to get rid of them, or the other thousands of coins Dad set aside. I know there are lots of silver coins of all denominations, but have never looked at them. Its weird, but I've just never really considered going through them all, but in order to get Mom some additional retirement money, I may approach her about it in the near future.

Go through and organize them. Definately set the red BU coins aside as they are worth more based on their grade. It's worth spending time to organize and catalog everything. For me nothing sucks worse than a random pile of coins.

That's four generations....and I would like to see it "added to" after I'm gone as well.
Let me twist your thinking a little...
Eventually this mess will become overwhelming and somebody's going to be "stuck" with it. Chances are that somebody down the road won't care about coins and will only be after the monetary value. At that point they will probably walk into a dealer and just sell everything to get the money. It happens EVERY DAY in the USA.
As most of you know, I've been selling off most of my "common" material over the past year or so. For two reasons, I need money and what I don't spend I will use to buy more valuable coins instead of having all this bulk.
Outside of my complete Lincoln collection, I'd simply rather have maybe 2-3 nice or key date coins. Those will not only be easier to store in a SDB (I have to rent 3 SDB's right now! $$$), but the value will increase much faster than having 10,000 common date proof sets, mint sets and individual coins.  Down the road some lucky heir will be holding at least a few key dates which will be easier to store (or hide), easier to transport and much easier to sell should they need the money.

Of course that fact is undeniable. A future "heir" may not care about the coins....they might just want the money, or divorce lawyers may get them, etc etc etc etc etc.
But....the way I see it, I can't worry about that....all I can do is "build" upon the collection with the fervor of my own obsession with the hopes that this will be carried on. Once I'm dead, if it isn't....well....I'll just have to turn over in my grave and I plan to haunt that person for the rest of their lives. I also plan to contact a gypsy and have them put a curse over the collection.
So you can see that I'm taking "solid" measures to ensure that the collection is well protected ! ......
I definately wouldn't want a collection full of very low grade valueless junk....or 19 coin tubes full of the 1982 Small Date Memorial Cent...and 15 coin tubes of the 1970 S mint Jefferson Nickel, and a stack of "circulation grade" albums, etc. etc. etc. etc.
I "will" have those things...but also some nice expensive gold, silver, proofs, cheap complete Sets, expensive Sets, duplicate singles, etc. etc. etc. I just want the whole gambit in my collection.
It'll never be worth +$50,000.00 or anything.....but it will involve "a little bit of EVERYTHING" ! And for whichever denomination a "future heir" may decide to seek out or specialize in or just be interested in......It'll be in my collection on some level !
But I do see your point on downsizing and minimizing and the unknowable future custodians of the collection.

I like the varying opinions - thanks. I'll probably get back into those rolls at some point. Right now, the sentimental value is pretty high because of the old wrappers and handwriting. He didn't just place dates and mint marks on the rolls, there are notes, like "Do not spend", "Hold these", "Very Old", and one of the coolest was "bought Jul 4, 1972" - and that one is on the BU roll of 44s. He probably got them at the flea market, the same one I still go to a couple of times a year in Webster, FL.
BadThad - I'll probably continue to keep my collection in line with what you describe. Build some really nice sets, SDB away some key coins, silver and gold, etc.
I called Mom, she told me she recently put $3k (face value) in silver dollars and halves in a SDB. My mind is doing laps around the track wondering what is in that box. LOL. She said there is a bunch more she doesn't want to mess with right now, but when I get a couple days this summer, to come up and go through it with her.
So - I'm going to spend a couple days at Mom's later this year with a price guide, laptop (to inventory) and hopefully help her fund a much deserved vacation somewhere.
