Hi, just wondered of there are any South Africa coin collectors out there. I thought I would post a Crown I recently got back from the grading service from my collection. Thanks, CP.

patersc- That is a very nice coin! Quite a beautiful design. I am just amazed at how little these coins are worth though (both proof and not). For a coin that only had a mintage of 500 it is just baffling that it could only be listed in Krause as worth $75.

Hi, thank you for your comments. It is a lovely design. A most successful rendition of the springbok on the reverse. The proof mintage is 500 with regular mintage at 84454. The proofs are very well struck with nice mirrors and almost a cameo effect on the bust obv. The are certainly underrated! Especially examples without scratches and hairlines or significant cabinet friction by being stored in cases. Recently I have seen top population coins of this year go for $170+ at auction. In South Africa it may reach R2500 or $250+. It is the second rarest of the SA Crown series, the rarer being '59. The whole proof set is quite lovely. I have not really seen a nicer set in terms of overall design. Cheers. Craig.
