I usually Detest, with a capital D, gimicky modern coins that are produced for "collectors". I much prefer actual coins used (or intended for use) as actual currency- ideally 400 years old plus.

But I just couldn't resist these - they were only a couple of quid and are really tacky -- but I kinda like them.

They are all Cuban 1 Pesos with a Pirate theme.

You could have mine ... if I had any of those. Don't really like colored coins. Color in the sense of bimetallic is OK, but these pieces, right, quite tacky. Besides, I wonder whether female pirates actually fought that way ...

Those are some pretty cool designs. I'm not a fan of colorized coins if they are done by a third party, but if a mint does it themselves then that's not as bad.

I wonder what the women had against buttons? :D

Those are really different, and yes, quite tacky. With that said, I would love to add them to my collection. As far as the female pirates, if you were in the fight, where would your primary focus actually be? Seems a pretty good tactic to me.

Not having seen the coins featuring the female pirates before removal how about their names so I can google?
I think I'm with the majority and think they're tacky but each to his/her own. I would keep them in my collection if I got them for nothing but I certainly wouldn't spend any hard-earned on them.

These coins get a mention near the end of this old "most unusual coins" thread.

As for the ladies in question, it is a matter of record that Mary Read signed up on both her naval and pirate ships pretending to be a male, and both her and Anne Bonny always dressed as males when in combat. Portraying them as the Cubans have done on these coins is as cheap and tasteless as the paint jobs on these coins are.

The theme and colour makes them look like POGs!

These are great. For some odd reason we have a running pirate joke in my office. I think one of the women had a problem with her eye right before I got hired on. She had to wear an eye patch for a little bit and the pirate jokes took off. I think that she actually started the jokes. I actually know that National Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19. These coins would bring the house down.

The designs and the way the pieces were made is pretty cheap indeed. They were produced by the Tower Mint, by the way, a private mint in the UK. Interestingly, even on this Wikipedia page, Anne Bonny is depicted sort of topless ...

chrisild- Ah so that is why those pics were removed before I had a chance to see them. Honestly, the subject matter is cool, but since they are not real coins I would have to pass on them.

I wouldn't say they are not real coins - at least Krause considers them to be real coins - but they are specificially for the tourist market. If memory serves, Cuba operated a dual currenty for locals and tourists for a while - I'm not sure if they still do.
