These three coins are quite strange. They were all issued during the Taliban regime in Afghanistan but the nature of their iconography suggests that they were designed by someone outside that ruling elite. For example the depictions are of people or animals - a big no-no at the time. There is even a contemporary similar example celebrating the Statue of Liberty.

So while these do have the "Islamic State of Afghanistan" as the issuing authority, I think the mechanics of who actually had them produced is more complicated than that.

They are all silver with a high mirror finish - and actually look quite good for modern coins.

Oh well, such pieces are produced because some major dealer or distributor wants to sell them. In those cases the distributor and the government of the country that officially issues the piece somehow share the revenue. Don't think any of these have ever been in Afghanistan ... The "UN" coin was produced by The Royal Mint (UK), the other two were apparently made in Habana (Cuba) by the way.

Yes, I doubt they are official "official" releases ( :) ) though as Krause lists them as Afghanistan in their main book rather than their odd curriences book, I assume they know who actually produced them and they have some sort of official standing.

I knew that they were minted in the UK and Cuba (thanks) though of course many countrys use foreign mints to actually produce their coins, particually the high quality ones for collectors markets so that doesn't really help narrow down with the who or why - who are likely still from Afghanistan.

All the best

I couldn't see them ever going into circulation in Afghanistan. There's no Arabic script on them whatsoever and I would think most Afghanis would consider them foreign. Krauss does list an awful lot of collector pieces that you just wouldn't find in general circulation. So I think that they are 'legal tender' for that country but you just wouldn't find one in circulation.

No they were obviously never intended for circulation as they are silver.
