Do you believe that this coin will make EF-40? Only pictures I had to work with. I think it looks better than VF.

It's difficult to say from the pictures. The obverse looks like it could be EF, but the reverse is too blurry to say.

Hard to tell from the pics like you said. But I agree with the last two posts. EF/VF

It's hard to tell from pictures when the coin's in a snap tite too, but I found this...."The subtype with the motto has a lower overall relief on both sides, as well as reduced sharpness in the details. These coins often appear lightly worn even when uncirculated." They also mention that split grades are common on the "with motto" variety, and the reverses are often a lower grade than the obverse.
I always look for the separation of the dentils at the edges, and these look clearly separated.
I'll take good pictures when he gets here. There's a big jump in value from VF to EF (over double) which is what drives my curiosity. I'm into it below VF money...so I'm OK either way, but I thought it was worth a shot.

Yeah, they come poorly-struck.

All seriousness aside, this one is an interesting chance. There's plenty of obverse detail to support XF, but the reverse isn't so hot especially about the eagle's neck. I look forward to seeing it under your lens.

Too me the coin in question has more wear on reverse than poor strike to keep it a VF-35.

I'll bet you paid more for that one than I did for mine. That's a nice coin.
I'll take some pics when it gets here, probably the middle of the week. The 1883 CC GSA I nabbed should arrive tomorrow. Took the seller awhile to get it into the mail. Maybe a little seller's remorse.

It gets real dicy when using digital pictures though. Just remember that 1843 seated half I bought that looked like it had a gouge under the ribbon across the shield. When the coin arrived...that feature wasn't there at all. I wouldn't be surprised if it's worn that much...but I don't think we can tell enough from this picture to definitively classify what's showing as wear, which is why I decided to go ahead and buy it to take a closer look. At what I paid...I can even "re-Bay" it and break even.

Heritage is a great resource. I figured that one cost a little more than 50 dollars.

I found this in the morning's mail. I know "what I think", but what do you think?

Thanks SD. The single, most significant thing I've learned in the last 6 months...is how to read digital pics....based on my experience, limited as it might be, in trying to photograph these things. I am getting to where I think I can tell why the picture's messed up.
Oh...the "what I think" part...I'd knock it to a 35 for too much surface chatter. I'll likely "re-Bay" this piece.
Lucky this time, since I think I can make a little on it...rather than break even or lose.
