I had a local coin dealer loan me his copy of Standard Grading Guide to Canadian Coins by james charlton and robert willey copy written 1965. I forwith and with great haste copied it.....over the years it has proved to be an excellent book with clear examples and descriptions.

I have a couple of questions first does anyone have an original of this book they would sell

secondly what books do the rest of you use for reference

The newer Charlton guides have text definitions of Canadian grades too.
A lot of people refer to this site as well for pictures (scroll down):

It should also be noted that Canadian and US graders may not see eye-to-eye,
and that even within the ranks of skilled Canadian graders, some will be more conservative
than others.

IMO, it's good to err on the conservative side, and make your purchases accordingly.

They reprinted the book in 1999 and it is still available. Try eBay or Chapters.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I'm looking to find a book on grading Canadian coins as well... something kind of like the ANA Grading Standards for US coins. The book that mbird suggested is a catalog, not a grading guide. I'd like something that has modern issues as well.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I bought a book called Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection by PCGS. This covers US coins but what I liked about it is the indepth written discussion of the elements of a coins grade and how they describe what to look of in each. Elements include wear vs incomplete strike, lustre, strike, contact marks, etc.
I would think no matter what country coinage these elements would apply. It is NOT a glossy pictured book, but does have some US examples of various grades.
