In 1976 as a 7 year old my parents emigrated from Portugal to the US. We used to live in a rural town a few kilometers from the beach. We moved to an apartment in an Urban area of NJ. Coming from the beach and having over an acre it was an adjustment moving to a small apartment. One of the neighbors realized I was having a hard time and asked my parents if I was interested in any hobbies. My mom told her I had a coin collection in Portugal. The neighbor proceeds to put together a small collection of US coins including Mercury dimes, Ikes, Wheat Cents, Bison Nickels and some Indian Heads. I was super excited. My dad picked up the Whitman folders so I could start filling them in. As Wheats were still in circulation, I found the majority of the set just from circulation. When I turned 17, I got my license and found a coin chop in a nearby town. Every couple of weeks I picked up the missing wheats and completed the 1941 to 1974 set. All the while working on the 1975 to 2013 and the 1909 to 1940. The 1975 to 2013 was completed in 2014. But the 1909 to 1940 always took a back burner to other important items. After completing the 1975 to 2013, I made a decision to complete the Lincoln Set. I went to several coin shops in the area and found the majority of coins I was missing, but I really didn't want to take apart the sets I started. (continued below, yep its a long story)

But that left the 1909 to 1940 Whitman folder still not complete. Last 2 years when I found the missing key's I picked them up. Trying to keep the look of the coins the same (and my wallet not too light) I picked up circulated coins. The 1914 D, I found locally and it was an excellent price (compared to today) The 1931 S popped up on an internet seller I do business with. Price last year was 50% less than today. ALMOST THERE

What a great description of your pathway toward a complete collection. Well done! I really like how you have been able to lean on friends and family (and CCF) to make this happen.
I found the '31-S oddly hard to find when I was working on my small cent collection.

A wonderful, beautifully told story! Thanks for sharing it with us. (Just one question regarding the 1922 "Plain" in the brown Dansco 1909-1958 album. Is that the real thing or did you just put in a placeholder? )

Quote: Great-looking set, congrats! Thank you Mr. Frog, you might notice a really shiny 1943 Steel cent, that was an upgrade from you. I found the '31-S oddly hard to find when I was working on my small cent collection. I agree Spence, vast majority of people on here (and collectors in general) are wonderful people. While I don't toot my horn, I try to pass on the generosity shown to me. I have passed on majority of the coins that have been upgraded to other collectors. Quote: Great story and collection! CONGRATS!! and Quote: Stunning!! Well done Thank you both.

Quote: A wonderful, beautifully told story! Thanks for sharing it with us. Thank you for following the story! Quote: (Just one question regarding the 1922 "Plain" in the brown Dansco 1909-1958 album. Is that the real thing or did you just put in a placeholder? ) The Waite Raymond album I picked that had the seed LWC included a weak reverse/weak D and for many years that was in the 1922 No D spot, but I don't collect varieties and I don't really feel the 1922 No D should be part of the album, so I picked up a really nice BU wheat and put it in reverse to show the reverse. I still have the 1922 Weak D but its in a 2 by 2 for the foreseeable future. Will I get one eventually? I found one slabbed for $295, so the answer is maybe, BUT I would rather have the 1955 or 1972 DDO before the 1922 No D.

Steve, Thank you! What made this particular 1909 S VDB special was not only that a very generous collector helped me in getting it but also that he convinced me to get it in a higher grade and that a CAC would make a difference. It is also a very nice coin, many are dark, this one is a milk chocolate color with a pretty clean Obverse and super clean reverse. Its a truly pretty coin. Quote: So what's your next project?
Steve, I still want to finish the 7070 (only 3 to go, I found a Classic Head in VF condition, that won't break the bank). I'll try to negotiate to see if we can come to a deal. Otherwise, I am travelling to the Baltimore coin show and seeing what I can pick up there. The Penny Lady told me to bring cash and she'll post me in her newsletter ;) After that I want to get a few IHC that I am missing and maybe some American Gold Eagles. I am also trying to fill up a Whitman coin box with American Silver Eagles. But completing the 7070 is really the next project (trying not to take 45 years to get that one done).
