Any thoughts on what this might be? Mint error or counterfeit? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

With the full coin shots, the features are soft but think it's just from very deteriorated dies. Looks like it may have been cleaned too. I really like the look of the mm for a possible RPM, but hard to believe it has not been found before, as this would be a new one. I think it would be worth a few bucks to send in though. With the nice cracking on the reverse, I do not feel it is a counterfeit coin but will let the folks more familiar with this series of coins speak to it. Maybe we with both learn something.

to the Coin Community Forum! Nice full coin pictures Although deteriorated dies is a good possibility here, this coin does have that too granular look to it more consistent with counterfeits. So I could ask if the coin is attracted to a magnet and to weigh this coin as a real coin of this type should weigh close to 6.3 grams. It does appear to be a die break from the second L of Dollar to the eagle leading more to a genuine coin.

Right - weigh it. It has that "casting" look to the surfaces - very grainy.

All great suggestions everyone. It is not magnetic and of course I need to pick up new batteries for my scale. The coin is not that grainy when physically viewed. Must be the way it's photographed.
Thanks

I looked at that known counterfeit on NGC, Marve, it is definitely not that particular one. The S looks right, look at the fact it has nice serifs, the counterfeit most definitely does not. What bothers me is the fact that this possible RPM has not been found up to now, back to Occam's razor.

Just out of curiosity, Babyc, do you own the coin or are looking at buying it?

Quote: The coin is not that grainy when physically viewed. I'm sure it isn't. But close ups bring out what the eye can't see. This is one coin that should be viewed with suspicion untill proven otherwise.

Looks okay to me, but I am not an expert on these.
Errers and Varietys.

It looks "soapy" to me. I lean towards fake.

This looks to be a fake to me as well.
Soapy look as pointed out before. Lacks luster despite having little wear. Missing letters at the center reverse and the upper right obverse has that Class VI doubled die type of extra thickness that a lot of fakes have.
