Veery neat..I hope all goes well with the landing!The hottest new collection to own will be a complete 9 planet coin set..takes 29 years to complete...free meteor dust with every purchase, and, if you act now, we'll throw in a rare Mercury Dime, smashed into the Planet Mercury, melted coin recovered, flown home, re-coined with original dies as a 1941-S...act now, as orders selling fast.

I hope that they have some sort of good coverage of the landing of the mars rover. Knowing our crappy news it will get a 10 second menton and that will be it. Anyway, Aussies if you are interested Rover is expected to touch down at 3.30pm Sydney time. I still don't see a reason for a Penny. Even on Mars a Starbucks cup of coffee would cost way more than that. And imagine someone on Mars at a McDonalds trying to buy something with a Penny. And too try to buy some gas to send that thing back for grading.  just carl

This Mars cent has a lot of good identification markings - making it easy for PCGS to certify it Genuine without a grade. No Lincoln Cent collection can now be called complete without this coin. I bid $225,000 for this 1909 VDB "Mars Cent" My guess as to when it will be recovered.... 2110  Edited by Danester

Ken Edgett is our fellow coin collector on the Mars Curiosity Rover team -- he might even be a member of CoinCommunity? He was on the panel for yesterday's (Tuesday Aug 7th) JPL Press Conference -- the 3rd one since Sunday night's Mars landing.  Quote:
Curiosity's 1ยข piece is not just any old penny.
Edgett picked out and purchased the penny with his own funds. A 1909 "VDB" cent, the coin is from the first year Lincoln pennies were minted, the centennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The initials ("VDB") of the coin's designer -- Victor David Brenner -- are etched onto the coin's reverse.
Accompanying the penny on the MAHLI calibration target is a tiny cartoon of a character named "Joe the Martian." Both the coin and the character serve double duty: both are calibration targets and both are intended to enengage the public.
"Everyone in the United States can recognize the penny and immediately know how big it is, and can compare that with the rover hardware and Mars materials in the same image," Edgett said. "The public can watch for changes in the penny over the long term on Mars."
"Will it change color? Will it corrode? Will it get pitted by windblown sand?" Edgett said. On the NASA JPL site (link above in previous post) the daily Press Conferences are streamed live everyday at 10:00 am, but I don't see them being archive at this time. They should have used an ATB 5 oz puck, that would have really thrown everyone off on the size of everything. :-) |
