Just wait til these girls' grandchildren get a display case full of "shiny coins" and find out they are worth melt!
Ouch! On the bright side, it is conceivable that these coins will be worth melt regardless of condition by the time their grandchildren get them.

Well, look what I have stumbled across. I am the mother of one of the "famous finders" who are going to "polish" the "rusty" coins.

We find this absolutely facinating the publicity this is finding. We had no idea people would care about this story. There is no polishing of coins, we did talk to a local dealer who told us how to clean them since they were a little muddy.

The story was the words of the reporter. We were not pleased when she had the girls drop the coins.

We were notified by the news station who originally did the segment with the girls that their news desk has been overwhelmed with people wanting this story and they have been getting calls from coast to coast. I heard today this was on a TV station in Jacksonville Florida! WOW!

My grandfather is a coin collector. So I know a little about coins. However, the news station wants to do a follow up with us, and want us to have the coins "appraised". Not sure if we can trust anyone around here.

So I turned to this site and found our story! WOW! Do any of you have suggestions as to what we should do as far as getting the coins appraised? My husband bought a book and they eye magnifier thing so we can see details. Don't know how far to go or where to take them.

Well, posting the denominations, dates and mint-marks here is a good place to get started. At the very least, we can give you an idea of which ones are the most valuable, and which are pretty much just worth the silver content.

Welcome to the forum! Educating yourself is the best thing you can do, and I see you have already started by picking up a book. May I ask which one you picked up?

In a nutshell, appraising coins largely depends on a coin's grade, unless you have a super super rare coin. Rarity is also important; the number of coins minted by year, by year and the mint where the coin was produced, and different varieties (i.e. Type 1 or Type 2 Standing Liberty quarter, doubled dies, overdates, etc). Depending on the book you have, you may not have a comprehensive list of different varieties.

Grading is a measure of the condition of a coin, MS-70 being the highest possible grade a coin can receive. Grading is tricky, different denominations are graded based on different criteria.

Take your time, have fun and ask lots of questions! And remember....

Welcome palmersr! If you have access to a digital camera with a macro setting(flower icon) or a flatbed scanner, post some pictures and we can help you with grades and values.
Rest in Peace

I am happy to learn that you are not cleaning the coins. I don't know why I ever believe anything I hear on the news!

I suppose the book that you got will help with the values for the coins but please come back here and -- if you can -- post pictures. You will find plenty of people here that are eager to help. You can gather all the information you need to make your own appraisal.

Whew! Glad to hear that the coins are not going to get polished. I was just so sad to think that these girls would polish the coins when they didn't know better, only to find out years later that they might have cost themselves hundreds or thousands of dollars when they wanted to sell them if there were some rare dates in there. Glad to hear this was a media mistake.

to CCF!

I am so glad that you found us. It would be awesome if when the reporter comes back for a "follow up" if you would mention our family of coin collectors, and how you can learn how to care for coins and learn more about what your coins are from our collective knowledge.

Your most valuable find is the youngsters that are actually a major part of the future of this hobby. I sure hope they try to learn a little bit more about their coins rather than how much they are worth to some dealer.

We have an awful lot of fun and camaraderie with each other on here and also make some very trustworthy friends over time that help each other to not get taken advantage of and how to properly preserve the pieces of history we acquire.

Best wishes on behalf of the coin community. We always are excited and especially helpful to newcomers to the hobby here.
I hope that the girls join as you have. We do have young numismatists here that continue to learn and contribute to the best coin forum on the Internet.
Unfortunately many stories are told here that do not have such a happy outcome.

Oh, and another thing I think can help you. If you have a camera and can take images of the coins, we have a section that you can get a good idea of what the grades are and maybe even some estimates on the values.
Nobody is out to get those coins. Most people here feel cleaning, polishing and banging coins together is as pleasant as hearing fingernails scratching across a chalkboard.

Great story! I love/hate to hear things like this. Love it cause it always brightens my day to know coins like that are still out there waiting to be found. Hate it because I haven't found any caches like that yet.
Buy I am happy for those girls and their family. Hopefully it'll lead to a lifelong hobby that's enjoyable and possibly fortuitous.
