The gap where the curtain-rod slides in to suspends one's curtains would hide a few virtually unnoticed. Probably not a thief's typical target of interest. Spread out over an entire household...

Quote: Even little yippers are a good enough countermeasure, as any criminal knows the noise can potentially get the attention of owners or even one's neighbors. Agreed. A small but noisy dog can be a great deterrent to any thief who wants to go about his business quietly. Our neighbors have a Jack Russell terrier and he has outstanding hearing. Nothing gets by that little guy... all 12 lbs. of him. Such a dog won't do any damage to a thief but waking up the homeowner with his 12-gauge certainly will.

Just don't hide ANYTHING in a room heating vent. Countless teen angst movies and TV shows have ruined this hiding spot forever.

The only problem with hiding stuff is that you may end up dying without telling anybody where it's all hidden or get Alzheimer's and just forget where you hid everything. Unless, of course, you tell other people about it or write it down somewhere, which kind of defeats the purpose of hiding it in the first place...

I wouldn't hid my PMs in anything that might burn.

That's why some of us prefer to use safe deposit boxes over home storage.

Beyond keeping your will current, make sure you include a confidential document itemizing your assets and their location(s). Have your attorney keep a sealed copy of the will, your asset list, and any relevant instructions for your heirs and executor. With this done, just make sure your family knows to contact the attorney if something happens.

The other problem with hiding personal property (your PM stack) inside real property (your house) is that if your heirs get in a rush to sell the house, any undiscovered PMs become the rightful property of the new owner after closing. Sure, there may be some recourse *if* the mistake is discovered, but it'll likely be costly and involve the courts and lawyers and a lot of unpleasantness.
I don't think we want to get into a whole probate discussion (never a fun topic), but it's important to understand that even the most competent and rational heirs are likely to make mistakes. The ONLY way to avoid a tragic loss of hidden material wealth is to try and make finding your things as foolproof as possible.

Some bullion dealers will allow you to buy physical, then offer you secure storage at a less rate, because you are a customer.
