I like toned coins, but this one doesn't really move me. And I think a 1950-D is about a $15-20 coin in this condition. I've got a comparable one (untoned) I picked up for 15 bucks.

Looks like a PCGS holder, which makes a doctored coin somewhat less likely. I'm surprised it made 66, but it's nice.

I am with the natural tone vote .. but did not vote .. I was thinking $50 is to much.

A MS 64 coin it can be had for less than $20.

This is a very attractive coin, I was thinking this coin was MS 65
before I read your last post.

If it is slabbed by a top TPG, with a MS 66.
And I was wanting one, I think I could go $50 for a MS 66 or better.

You missed an option, NT and Had I the money I would spend less than $50.00.

It lacks strike, it does not have full steps and there are numerous contact marks on it. Yes the toning is natural and I find it attractive too, but look past the toning and see the condition of the coin does not justify any more than a $20.00 bill in my opinion.

I would also like to say that there are many nicely toned uncirculated 1950 D nickels that are available and probably will be for some time to come. Many were hoarded in 1950 and stayed in paper wrappers that can produce a nice tone like this. Keep hunting or overspend, that's your choice. I would not spend anything like $50.00 and toning is common enough for this date to do better with a better grade.

That coin could very well be AT. Then, again, it could very well be NT. Then, again, it could very well be half-AT, and half-NT, in which case, depending on which came first, it would be ANT, or NAT. Then, again, it could be QT.

Alright, thank you for all your help!

Now, here's an untoned one. Nickel experts, what do you make of it? (I was the underbidder in the auction, I feel confident I let it go well but perhaps I'm wrong!)

Not an expert but the second one looks better to me. I would not buy it for anything near $50, though, but that's me.

I agree, the second one is a higher technical grade. I don't think it's worth 50 bucks, but it's a nice looking nickel.

Now that's a full five steps, right? Not sure if that nick in step 6 would keep it from FS with NGC, but it would with PCGS, right?

Btw, it's holdered NGC as a 66, which seems right to me, no? Pretty nice strike. When you see this side by side with the rainbow toned one, it's hard to imagine how that got 66!

I bid $45 (not counting bp!) which I figured was high and should guarantee I'd get it, so when somebody outbid me I just let it go.

When I was collecting them, I would look at the adam's apple, pillars, and steps.

I think the second is a great coin but I'm not sure I would rate it as MS only because of what looks like wear on the reverse. I fully agree the rainbow one does not rate @ 66.

I would expect a 66 to have sharper definition of the pillars on both coins. Again, that is my opinion.

I don't think you went wrong letting the second one go after it went over $45.

Humm... good to know Plum! I've seen a few of these 50-D's with pretty weak strikes - from what I've seen so far, I'd rate the first at about 6/10 and the second at 8 or 9/10 for strike. I didn't know that could figure in so much to a grade, but I guess when you get into grades of 65+, it really becomes important.

Anyway, I'll keep that in mind as I search for my '50-D. =) Thanks for everyone's feedback! I'm learnin...

!

Apparently, there are may be quite a number of people that disagree with the posters here. The teletrade auction has just gone live and the rainbow nickel is already at $380!

Last I checked - about an hour later - it had bid up to $480 or so. It's not listed in the auction results, meaning that it did NOT sell for whatever the final bid was hours later. That means the seller has a very high reserve (unpublished). I tried to check on it later last night, but it was no longer listed, so I don't know what the high bid was.
