Morgan, All sorts of things...
This is all from memory without any research so correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.....
Mint put in new presses making many types of errors almost non-existent.
They put in sorters both optical and mechanical to take out bad copies of a coin.
They cracked down on mint employees who snuck with out real and / or fantasy errors.
They told coin rolling companies that they had to return the errors or lose the contract.
...................
Major errors from 2002 on are almost non-existant and when and if they show up they commmand a very heavy premium.
That is the main reason I think error coins like the Speared Bison, Wisonson up down low sidewise leafs, and the double dies are expensive.
It's the mint's doing by limting major errors.....

Definately unusual. Seems like it's from mint employeers who smuggled them out.

Is that the one with Jason Robards and Lawrence, Kansas? It got a lot of press at the time of its initial release (1970s?) for its potential accuracy and realism. Good doomsday movie. Fred

I was going to say you don't have to get mad at a poor old coin and stomp them so hard, but never mind. So how do you put a value on these coins? They must be worth a lot. And what are these ones you showed us worth?

That's the one. I remember seeing it when it first came out too. I was just entering high school. And it gave me a GOOD scare! First time I've seen it since. Still gives me a scare, especially with Kim playing with his new toys!!

Oh yeah that's true as well. Then some tried to sell the waffled coins and the price was pretty high at first but now have come down. I never bought one of those waffled coins and never wil, they are not errors as they were stamped that wasy on purpose. Check out this 97 mushroom

Seems to me we can make some of our own mushroom coins by putting a good coin on the railroad tracks. 'Course, there won't be any funny dates, misplaced faces, double-strikes or other identifiable devices after the locomotive passes. Correction: maybe if the coin is placed at the edge of the track so the locomotive just swipes part of it... I've got a Barber quarter (date wiped out) my father used for exactly this.

That brings back some memories. We used to do that as kids. We would always use pennies. We would put our ears to the rails to listen for the trains to find out if the train was coming. Lay the pennies on the tracks and then duck in the bushes. After the train passed we would search and find the pennies. I wish I had kept a couple just for nostalgia. I would do it now if I could but I would be scared to do it and get caught. Boy, that wa fun!!
