Well I just went in to pick up my $15 of copper and the lady was really sorry that there was only $8 worth of copper and that the other $7 worth were actually 1966 50cent coins!
Needless to say I told her not to be sorry as I'd be happy to take the 5o's off her hands too!
She was kind enough to spend 20 mins with me even though she had a que building up, and she took my details to call me if anything else came in I might be interested in
Kinda feel like I scored!

How dare she! I'd be writing to the manager responsible and ask for the other $7 in copper.

Meanwhile, I'll help out by taking those pesky 50s off your hands.

No harm in going into a few banks and asking Gecko. I don't even have an account at this bank!
Yass - you should'a seen the smile on my face when she pulled them out! It really has made my day :)

You certainly did score! With each 1966 50c currently worth over $12 just in silver content, all up you got over $170 in silver for $7. What a bargain!

interesting and fun discussion. I keep some 3 or 4, 1 & 2 cent coins because they are misstrikes. One is a die cap error and a totally spectacular coin. The others are mostly partial collar errors.

Hi everyone.

Ive been reading this site for months and thought it was about time to join.

Ive been going to banks for a while now asking for 1 & 2c coins and searching through them for 1968. I also look for the 1967 in the 2c with the SD initials missing which have a high CV.

Ive had very mixed results when asking. Some of the tellers are more than happy, some look at you with a puzzled face and I've even had one teller get quite angry. I think I've just about been to every bank in Adelaide and have found about 1 in 5 will give them to me. ANZ have had the best hit rate and Comm bank the worst by far.

I was wondering if anyone has had the courage to ask if they have any predecimal coins? (i havent!)

I have tried about 6 or 7 banks in Sydney CBD and they all look at me like I am nuts... have been told on three occasions that "the old 1 and 2 cent coins are no longer legal tender"! and this from companies that make billions every quarter and we are forced to trust with our money... hmmmmmmmm... time to go back to putting the dosh under the mattress! shhhhh, don't tell anyone!

I know of a security firm lockup (in a large provincial city) that has around $60,000 of accumulated 1¢ and 2¢ pieces that they will get around to returning someday.
Definite "NO" to requests to assist them by buying some back.

How many 1968, different mintmarks and variations would there be there? I try not to think about it.

Jeff
PS. I won't name the city but it promotes itself as the first inland city (not sure where Canberra is then) and, think why Graeme Kennedy got booted from TV, then you are almost there. It also happens to be the place of my birth and I am a regular visitor to family. And, I swap a lot of coins with a collector residing (what a nice word) there. No prize for being first to guess the city unless I can find a coin with a crow on it.
