I would buy all three. But seeing that you are only buying one I would go for the Postumus.

I have no idea how that picture of the Postumus coin got so small. Here is another and hopefully it will stay large as the other images.  |

Just based on details, I would pick the 3rd coin, all else equal. I'm trying to get a handle on these inscriptions...does that one say Severus?  |

IMO the septimus severus looks really good. Not too bad of a postumus either. It all depends on what you already have is what it would boil down to if I was in your position.

Yeah,but it is much expensiver then his catalogue value. Of course, it is not bad coin. All coins here are nice if you ask me.

The thing is that I have nice coins of each of these rulers. Several. Here are the nicest of the ones I already have:     I'm just not sure if I need another of any of these rulers or that the coins for sale are near as nice as the ones I already have. I know I'm sounding like a woman in a shoe shop. Oh well. JW |

well then it depends on which reverse you would want to add to your collection. they are all nice and I think the first one is the most detailed.

I think perhaps that owning a second coin with a different reverse is good. Some reverses I really like, like the first coin you took a photo of at the beginning of the thread. I tried attributing the coin as best as I could.
I tried breaking the words down as best as I could.
Obverse Legend:
IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG
IMP = Imperator
Antoninus - not sure why they use this name when it's a Elagabalus.
PIVS = sobriquet pius
AVG = Augustus "Revered One"
Obverse Device: laureate draped bust right.
Reverse Legend:
ABVNDANTIA AVG
Abundantia - the goddess of abundance and plenty.
Reverse Device:
Goddess Abundantia with a cornucopia, dumping it's contents.
The goddess on the coin signifies the blessing of plenty upon his reign and the golden age.
Final Attribution:
Elagabalus Denarius. Rome, AD 220-221.
RIC 56, RSC 1a, BMC 189
After trying to attribute the coin, I finally found a match at wildwinds.com . I doubt I would have been able to without it.
I hope you guys don't mind me doing this. This is the first one I've done and I'd like some pointers too. Thanks.

All nice and the prices are OK in a 'take it or leave it' situation. As Doug as already said were it not for the soapy obverse on the Elagabalus I would snap the dealers hands off. Even with the obverse problems I would struggle not to buy it for the excellent reverse at this price. The Postumus is nice but I think a bit too high at that price, its also not as nice as the one you have. I'd say you could pick one of these up for $15-20 on ebay. I've long thought Postumus coins are overpriced but not sure why. Out of the other two I think the Severus has the most charm and although no better than your own its certainly no worse. It has eye appeal and I'd go for it. |

This is just a first step so those of you who know that wildwinds has some attribution problems as well as not all coins are listed there, I know this. Since you can read the legend on the first coin and you know the reverse figure is Abuntantia, go to the wildwinds page for Elagabalus and use the search function (ctrl + F) and type Abuntantia. This will narrow your search down to only those coins with that reverse. Its much easier then you might think. Give it a try. There should only be two possibilities and a quick look will tell you this is RIC 56. Try it with one of the other coins |

After seeing your other coins, the young Caracalla is more attractive since it is more different from the one you have than the others are from their match. If you want a second Elagabalus, perhaps you want one with the horned portrait. A second Septimius might be an Eastern mint coin. Your Postumus is earlier and has some silver look so a bronze one like the coin under consideration is a decent choice but I might look for a reverse that is not a figure striding to the left. A lot of this depends on whether you are aiming to 'grow' into a collection of several thousand coins (in which case you buy what is available when it is available) or trying to make the collection an overview in as few specimens as possible. The only wrong answer is one that reflects our opinions rather than your own.

After considering everyone's remarks regarding the coins to buy and the coins I already own, I decided not to buy any at this moment. Bummer, cause I really liked a couple of the coins, but to be buying just because I can does sound like I may have a compulsive buying problem. But I do love these coins, so for now I will just keep on looking. Thanks to everyone for their input.
