Appreciate your reply, thank you. Not sure if it is cast, no tell-tale signs of it (in the usual way I could tell a cast medal).. The pictures aren't particularly good, I can try and take some better ones if anyone needs them?

Dear PaulMcCormick, this coin is indeed a Bengal Presidency coin struck at Murshiabad mint. Some one has used that as a locket/pendent, which used to be common practice in India those days. I am trying post your image annotated to give you hint on the mint name as seen on it. Unfortunately, I am unable to convert the image to JPG version, but still I am posting the version I got. Hi, thank you both for your help. The jpg worked fine too thanks.. It's fairly heavy, the rim has small diagonal marks all the way around.. Mass, what was the purpose of the imitation tokens? Are they modern and meant to deceive, like fakes? I'll have to get a copy of coin valuation guide and see what KM99 is worth unless someone has a copy to hand? It was an impulse buy and obviously outside my area of collecting and knowledge so I appreciate all the help this forum is providing.

The diagonal marks on the rim signifies oblique milling. This appears to be a genuine coin.

Thanks for the pic, it is definitely oblique milling then. Is this a rare coin, or encountered fairly frequently? I bought it having not seen it as was described as an Arabic medal.. Will the suspender detract from the value? I'm just trying to gauge whether it should go into a specialist auction, or on that well known auction site e**y.

This is not a rare coin. But is not a frequently available one as well. Similar looking coins are there of Farukhabad mint also. (I will post a pic of one Farukhabad coin if available with my image gallery). Both are scarce. Suspender is surely an unwanted attachment. It will marginally reduce price. Coin is more or less in an acceptable condition. So reduction will not be substantial. This coin is considered among the East India Company coins during auctions. Some forum experts may make a better comment about whether it should go into special auction etc. Thanks.

This is a scan of Farukhabad rupee. Please note the difference between the mint names "Murshidabad" and "Farukhabad". Among these, Farukhabad is scarcer.  |

DNW may not take it as a single lot......probably is not a significant enough value. No harm in asking if you happen to be there for a medal auction though
