 SuperDave, novice photographer here, are you using the higher resolution, at farther distances, and cropping for close-up shots? Those images are so clear...I'm super geloso! Edited by oih82w8

Dave,
One of the limitations I've feared about using Point and Shoot cameras for coin photography has been their ability to focus close.
Does your Panasonic have more capability in that area? Or are you merely content to take pics from farther away and you just crop?

The LX5 can focus at a distance of 1cm from the subject. The ability to get realistic light onto the coin is a greater limitation than minimum focusing distance. I'm 2-1/2" from the coin right now, and the image cropped to just the coin is 1600 pixels in diameter. I'm having to half-size them just to post here.

SuperDave...I generally put the Jansjo's about 3-4" from the coin. Pretty much every sequence I've taken from different heights brings me back to this range. The closer you bring the lamps, the "larger" and more diffuse they appear and yet simultaneously brighter since the light is concentrated in a smaller area. At 6" or more the lamps appear as small point sources, and you lose a lot of light outside the perimeter of the coin.
Another way to increase the intensity and focus while simultaneously creating diffusion is to use a cone Concentrator. I published some details a while back on these. The best ones I've made about double the intensity and focus on less than half the area, so less wasted light and less chance for contrast loss from the inevitable flare,.

DAVE,,,,is your camera truely EIGHT FEET FROM THE OBJECT? telescoping the moon or a coin?like the results just need to  know if I need to =build a planetarium... in reverse to do coins...  |

Sorry,
I don't mean to intrued, as I am moving I caught the 8 feet thing, and as I am currently trying to figure out why my 55 MM lens can not take a full shot of a morgan, I read the 8 feet thing.. Meaning maybe ?I need more distance
rather than closer from the lens to the camera body...or perhaps a greater lens length...from lens to object?/

Oh, I get it now.  The eight feet is the distance I have to place the Canon from Santoku, to get the whole rig in the shot with a 50mm lens. You had me goin' there for a minute. |

SuperDave...now that you've introduced Santoku to the world, I think I'll publish the photos I took before I shipped the setup to you showing the "Three Uses". First Use: Copy Stand. That's my D5000 with 105VR. The Camera is mounted directly to Microscope Stand  Second Use: Bellows Mount. That's a Vivitar M42 Triple Track Bellows and Rodenstock Apo Rodagon D 75/4  Third Use: MonoZoom7 Stand. Ray created that himself, to my specification - I seriously doubt anything like it is available commercially. Yes, money changed hands, and it's worth every penny.

I cobbled this together for SuperDave from items I had available, plus a few modifications. It is actually camera-agnostic, so you can adapt it to virtually anything. The bellows is M42 (or T-Mount depending on bellows choice) so it's easy to adapt to your Canon. The Leica is C-Mount, so again quite easy to adapt.
As-shown, the setup would cost ~$1100. However, there are many options I have in creating such a setup that affect the price:
- Choice of Bellows
- Choice of Lens(es)
- Choice of MonoZoom or Stereo/StereoZoom Microscope (or no Scope at all)
- Stand options
Santoku was designed to meet specific requirements that SuperDave had for his application. My preference is to work this way, rather than making generalized setups or cloning a setup that was designed for someone else. I've built and sold a few systems with less expensive (but still good) lenses and no Microscope option for $300-500, so this will tell you the range of pricing depending on various options.
So, if you have interest in a setup like this, PM me and let me know what exactly you would like to use it for and I can develop a system that does what you need and fits your budget.

All I had to acquire was $20 worth of specific adapters for my camera; Ray could have provided those as well but they're cheap and commonly available.
It's going to take me a_long_time to explore and become proficient with the range of Santoku's capabilities.
