If there is a mint mark to the right of Monticello then it is 1964 or older.

no mint mark means it could be anything...

Nickels were given out with PAYDAY candy bars in 1988. But the package for those looked different. So I'm thinking it is older than that....

Can you turn it in the packaging without ripping it?

That could scratch the coin if he turns it around somehow. I thought of that myself. But it might be the only way to find out what it is.

Compare it to other nickels of various dates. The relief has changed every so often over the years - the closest match should give you a very rough idea of the age (e.g. you might be able to say it's looks more like a 1970s era nickel than a 1990s era).

I wouldn't mess with it until I knew what the package was from. I have been searching and can't find anything yet. I would investigate the package first.I like it!

I would try to spin it around to see what it is. But, that's just me.

Tough one.
You should probably try to determine where it came from as a unit.
However, the packaging is probably not 'coin friendly', so leaving it in will probably be detrimental to the coin anyway...

I have found some info, several different places talk of the same thing, but I am not exactly sure about the packaging. As somebody else already said,it is probably a 1988 D nickel from a PayDay candy bar by Hershey's.
A short lived promo since it was considered unsanitary. I definitely would not open it.

I agree with not opening it.

As n9jig said, if there is no mint mark next to monticello, it's not older than 1964, and even if it was, it is still probably more valuable as a candy bar giveaway or whatever, than as a nickel anyway. Some people are crazy collectors of the old cereal box prizes or happy meal toys, so you never know it could be very valuable to someone like that.

Have you brought it to a coin dealer? They would probably know for sure.

It looks like it might be this.

Send an email with photo to Leaf Inc. (Payday) PR department telling them the story and asking them about it. Ask them if your nickel could be a nickel from one of their 1988 Payday bars. Their records might indicate how they were packaged back then.

"In 1988, Hollywood Brands, the maker of Payday and Zero, was purchased from Sara Lee by Huhtamäki Oyj and became part of Leaf, Inc.[5][6].[5]"

Hershey then bought it in 1996. I don't know if all candy bar records would go to the new owners. If so, then Hershey PR dept might be a good source.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf_Candy_Company

PayDay was first introduced in 1932 by Frank Martoccio. Martoccio founded the F.A. Martoccio Macaroni Company, and also later served as head of the Hollywood Candy Company. Hollywood also produced the ZERO bar.[1] Hollywood moved to Centralia, Illinois, in 1938. In 1967, the Martoccio family sold Hollywood Brands to Consolidated Foods, which later became Sara Lee. Fire destroyed the Centralia plant in 1980. Production of the PayDay bar continued with help from the L.S. Heath and Sons Company until a new facility could be constructed. In 1988, Hollywood Brands was acquired by the Leaf Candy Company, then later became part of The Hershey Company in 1996.

Keep us posted.

Just did a search and came across this thread....I have one of those also, it is dated 1988-D. Besides the Payday candy bar, I seem to remember that Readers Digest would send them out in subscription envelopes. I may be wrong about the Readers Digest but for many years I have always thought my packaged nickel was from Readers Digest.
