No, not at all. Generally, I find most numismatists to be a closed mouthed lot in the wild, due to the obvious fact coins can be expensive and easily transportable, making theft a realistic possibility. There's a reason why guns and coins have a natural affinity for each other, aside from being both made of metal. Anyone that has any kind of PMs at home, also should have a firearm and know how to use it. Just my thoughts, you asked...

I dont show at all really. Not that I'm scared of people knowing I have coins, just dont think anyone would be interested in seeing them. I do however hate it when I get coin related stuff in the mail, like newsletters and such....basically says "hey look, this guy must collect coins" :(

The main reason is security with the second being most are at the bank...back and forth.
Same here--once I take a good photo, it works as a study photo and to post here--my coins seldom leave the SDB.

Greatest reason to be carefull of what you get in the mail. Many collectors subscribe to coin or gun magazines. Many of these stick out of a mail box exposed to the world and many do not have any type of covers, just the magazine itself. And oddly enough, even the postal service does not always have the most honest people working there either.

I do not show my coins to anyone or broadcast the fact that I collect coins. I think people that do are at a much higher risk of having their collection stolen. I do not subscribe to any coin magazines because I believe this is the same as telling total strangers that you are a collector. I will purchase these over the counter in cash. I will even cancel any and all news letters from anyone that is not discrete with their packaging.

My wife and kids know I collect coins. The wife has some idea of what I have and they all have seen some of my collection. But no one knows all of what I have. I have shown some of them off to family. I've shown my parents a lot of what I have not long ago, I really trust them. Plus they live far away and only visit rarely and at their age I doubt they remember much of what I've shown them. My Dad has a small collection that he's shown me.
Mostly I keep it to myself. The wife and kids don't seem too interested but they know it's valuable so they don't talk about it much to others (I hope).
I would love to know someone I could trust who would enjoy the hobby as much as I do.

It's the only sad part about this Hobby: being low keyed about what you have. You will notice as time goes on, the more valuable your collection, the less you tell others that you are a Coin Collector. In this day and age, with most people addicted to one of the five vices , a stolen coin collection of value can be a gold mine for 'em!
So, always be covert, like a secret agent spy and never tell, 'cause loose lips sinks ships!

DVCollector, What size box do you have?
Mines the middle one (we have 3 sizes at my bank) and it's full, need to go to the next size but they want too much.

Family knows what I have, and where I have it. I have shown parts of it to a couple of close friends from work, but I would take the parts there to show them, and they totally understand.

As seems to be the general rule that most are stating, is that "people talk". Even with my friends, it would just be innocent talk, but it is the people that they don't know that are listening to them, and that I don't know, are the ones that worry me.

I show it to my family sometimes. My mom is always quite interested, my dad is a numismatist too but doesn't really have any knowledge on coins so he learns something from me every time. My two sisters collect coins too, but aren't that interested in it that much (they're just jealous of my collection).

My friends all know I collect. My kids collect with me too but are not supposed to tell people. They have their own little collections to show their friends but nothing big. My house is very secure though, we have an alarm system, dogs, good neighbors that watch for thing out of the ordinary, and generally their is always someone at the house. Plus we are heavily armed as well. I feel safe showing my collection to close friends.

We have a very small collection that my husband and I collect together. We've showed my parents and our son some of the coins. I've heard most people don't share their hobby freely with everyone. Sad, since I think more people would be interested - it's kinda awsome to hold a coin from the 1700, 1800 or early 1900's and appreciate it.

The wife occasionally asks me about a recently acquired coin but for the most part its just for my eyes and pride. One other coin guy at works knows but only generally. Think most of my friends and family would think I was nuts if they knew the scope and cost involved in the collection- not that its huge or anything.

I try to explain things to my wife, so she'll have some idea of what to do with my coins if I get hit by a bus. I've also tried to explain some coins to my kids, in the hope that they might become interested in the subject. I work with a guy who has invested in silver by buying shares of the SLV ETF, and I've talked to him about investing in physical versus digital silver, referring in a general way to coins that I have. But that's about it.
