I disagree with all. On 1873 Indian cents the date is very small, whereas this date on the coin is large date, so it cannot be 1873 for this reason. They increased the size of the date starting in 1874 I believe. This coin I think can be only 1 of two dates. 1877 or 1875. The top of the 5 can look like the top of the 7 on worn examples. Picture of the reverse might help, because 1877 has a diagnostic on the reverse that 1875 does not have. The area that looks like a 3, could be the loop of the 5 coming through and maybe the part of the 5 is worn away, making it appear to look like a 3. This is not an 1873, though, of that I am sure.

I have to say 1873 also.

mycrob you may be right. When I overlaid the two images the date on the 1873 was smaller than the 187? coin. I just chalked it up to possibly an angled coin but it was clearly smaller than Drsandman2s coin.

Thanks for the overlay. I will get better pics and report back what I find when I get this coin in hand!
Am I the only one that thinks it looks like the top of a 7? I'll be the fool!

Yes, eager to hear! Hope you picked it up at a bargain price, too! I think it's got a good chance of being an 1877. Better than 50% chance!

It looks like a 7 to me too. Could you post a pic of the reverse? One of the diagnostics for 1877 is on the reverse.

I agree with cwb8539 and alluded to it above. Picture of reverse may help, though I suspect the reverse will be very weak as well and possibly inconclusive.

When I looked at it before the comments I thought it was a 1873. Or maybe an 1875. But I am leaning more towards the 73 now. Hoping for you it is an 77! Let us know!

Bluezone, that was a really nice and helpful overlay picture. I don't think anyone can completely say for sure what that is. Most people seam to see a 73. If I could chose I'd probably say 60% 75', 30% 77', 10% 73'.

Nice observation on the date size mycrob, but don't forget that on a very worn coin, the devices appear to flatten out and enlarge. Regardless, I think the loop on the bottom eliminates a 7, so it may be a 5 at best.

The reverse may help tell the tale if there is enough detail left. All 70's dates with the exception of 1877 business strikes are known to have a bold N reverse. 1870, 71, 72 are known to have both bold N and shallow N reverses. Business strikes of 1877 are known to have only a shallow N reverse (the proofs of that year have a bold N). If this coin has a shallow N reverse, it would effectively rule out a 73 or 75. The more I look at this, I think a 5 is also strong possibility. I can hardly wait for a reverse pic. This one has my curiosity going!

Quote: The reverse may help tell the tale if there is enough detail left.... That's the key...if there is enough detail left. This coin has a barely discernible everything, even liberty's face. I don't think there will be enough evidence to conclusively tell if its bold or shallow.
