Terrific find! Cherrying something of that value is always fun. It looks to have VG-ish detail to me, so should bring $150-$200 or so anyway.

I agree to leave it alone. For a rare coin like that you don't want to take a chance on messing it up even more.

I had an 1886 that looked liked that. I got $50 for it. Leave it alone and someone (or you) will use as a hole filler.

Leave it alone, it is desirable as it is. You don't want to take any chances of injuring it further. It is rough but has some detail and a strong date. There are a lot of collectors that would love to have that coin.

I wouldn't risk it on a coin this small and valuable that could accidently get spent or lost.

Nice find. I think anything you tried to do to improve the appearance or condition of that coin would only damage it.

HOLY MACKERAL. I didn't realize it was a key! Sheesh, I need to brush up.

Might be worth having it authenticated genuine?

I had a 1893 Columbian Elongate on a 1885 Liberty nickel. I sold it, and now I wish I had not.

The images below are not of the one I had... they are from an Sept 2007 Heritage Auction that sold for $185. Mine was a little nicer and sold for $350.

I agree with the above posts, it's fine the way it is. Never risk cleaning key dates if you want to keep their value to them.

I love old beat up coins. I have a page of them in my collection. Fun and interesting.

If that grades at VG, I think it's worth a bit more than $200.

It won't grade VG. That opinion is a details grade based merely on "how many letters of LIBERTY are visible." I think it would net grade FA-2.

Sounds about right. This 1885 might get $100
