And don't forget the women behind the throne. Mothers, Grandmothers, and wives often ran the empire while their children or weak husbands sat the throne. And don't under estimate these women. They could be very very ruthless.

Ricimer is the only one I know much about but he was certainly a 'puppet-master'.

Thinking about this a bit more I think I'd switch Elagabalus and Caracalla. Even though to many the earlier ones (1-3) are easier I still cant recognise any of them. Guess that reflects the areas I've been collecting in.

4. Marcus Aurelius
5. Elagabalus
6. Caracalla
7. Gordian III / Herennius Etruscus?

Yes, wasn't emperor Claudius killed by his own wife?

Collectively, all the emperors were named in this thread--good job!
The only ones I got at first glance were Nero, Marcus Aurelius, and Elagabalus--from coins I've seen.
Here is how these busts were identified:
1. Trajan
2. Tiberius
3. Nero
4. Marcus Aurelius
5. Elagabalus
6. Caracalla
7. Severus Alexander

Only one I was able to figure out correctly was Marcus Aurelius for #4, because of the beard.

Remember , without numismatics, art historians would not even know what a given princeps (emperor) looked like! Most portraits and statue are found without inscribed bases. Thank goodness the coins have a nice profile and a legend (inscription), that is why it is crucial to get profile photos of portraits in the round. Nice Photos!

Joe, that's a very interesting observation--and it makes total sense to me.

When they made the emperor's portrait on the obverse die, the engravers used marble busts as references, right?

VK, I've heard that too--the busts were distributed as reference of the emperor for coins.
