my vote goes for the large and lovely 50c and the Platypus 20c.

Yes with the fifty but disagree about the 20 sorry.

Sorry about the bad pics, I wish I had the real thing but I had to take these from my book. I don't think this pic below gives our pus the attention it deserves..I think it looks like a dead duck just under the water

I think this one bellow is far superior in design and would depict the australian fauna much better

Your-Favourite-Australian-Coin-Design?

And I think we should have some of these too

I think a coin that you can actually make out what the animal/place/thing is is better than one that your scratching your head wondering what it is..we have some of the most beautiful and amazing creatues and places in the world here but I don't think we promote them enough to the rest of the world and as for what's happening to our devil..my heart bleeds..I really hope they can do something to save them before we only have them in a cage I live in an area were we get the odd pus and it's getting harder to find them too..beatiful animal but just watch the spurs

As far as decimal coins go my favourites by far are the 1c followed very closely by the 2c. You don't have to stare for 10 seconds before you realise what animal it is like you have to with the crappy 10c (my least favourite).

Ausjack: When those definitive platypus 20 cent coins are worn such as the one you have pictured, it shows that ALL of the design intent remains. That is very rare for a coin design.

I have spoken to Stuart Devlin in person, and he remarked that that was one of the reasons why he ended up being very satisfied with the design of this coin.

That 2010 better, I used an old coin as they take a better pic but I still think they look like a dead duck under the water and the designer would have to say that wouldn't he..I know I wouldn't say Nah nah it wasn't one of my best designs, would you

If you have seen one in the wild you wouldn't think it's very flatering for such a beautiful animal..but remember this is just my opinion

Don't get me wrong, he's done some nice designs but the plat wasn't one of them sorry.

So talking about that..does anyone know who their next designer will be..do they have one picked out yet as devlin wouldn't be a spring chicken

He'd have to be worth a dollar or two after all these years..how old would you say he is sel?

I think the designer was refering to the engeneering success of this design, After 45 years of hard circulation they do indeed hold a lot of their original look.
They are not my favorite coin but the design is well engeneered and thought out as far as wear is concerned

I dont know if this one counts, but my vote goes to the Sydney Mint Sovereign - the design is simple, but nonetheless iconic. Honourable mention goes to the ram shilling and the 1911-36 Penny. Also, I agree with trout that the Melbourne centenary florin is overrated in the looks department.

I think the 1927 Parliament House florin is about as nice as it gets. I am also rather partial to anything with the traditional ram's head design, whatever the vintage.

This is the exact reason why I think that our Stuart Devlin coin designs for the 1c through to 20c are the best in the world. At first glance they seem like a fairly abstract design, it is only when you examine the coins more closely that the native animal in the design becomes apparent.
It is amazing that this multi layered approach to coin design was accepted in the 1960s. Maybe such sophisticated coin designs arn't so easily accepted in this age of instant gratification.

the 1927 parliament florin is nice along with the 1 and 2's, impossible to say which is my favourite though.
