He started out doing research and cataloging for John J. Ford Jr. I believe he was also a partner at one time with First Coinvestors. And he had a column in COINS called Bristles and Barbs opposite of Carl Allenbaugh column. He issued his own letters of authentication for coins, at least for awhile. I seem to remember him railing once in Bristles and Barbs about losers that didn't want to pay him after he authenticated some coins. Those letters may well be worth a fortune some day in spite of Breen's social transgressions. He's almost the Hollywood archetype of the brillant man who manages to end up discraced and ruin in the end. Only Breen never even got to be rich first before he destroyed himself.

Wasn't he also accused of stealing coins from the Smithsonian? Or was that someone else.
I think that was William Sheldon, accused of stealing large cents from the American Numismatic Society.

" You say and state that this man was a pedophile. Was he charged or convicted? And why? g"
He was both charged & convicted, and went to jail.

Yes, it was Sheldon and the ANS, although never proved.

I never purchased anything from Stack's or First Coinvestors so I never really came across anything graded by Breen. But I think technical grading back in the 70's was a lot easier. Market factors weren't decided by some Mystical Priesthood, they were decided by the market--coin collectors. Coin collectors decided what they found to be appealing or un-appealing. They assigned their own values to what they liked rather then accepting the values assigned by some TPG, and bid accordingly in auctions or bargained accordingly with dealers at shows.

I just finished reading the wikipedia reference on him. I had heard the name but still being relatively new in coin collecting I had not idea of his history. He was one strange dude and I don't think his loss is of any significance to the hobby or the world.

He was tried and convicted, that's enough for me. But, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in Wikipedia. It's a handy tool for very quick reference, that's about all.

Seems alot of my posts get slammed in some way, shape or form. Did I do something wrong to tick off the human race? Do I even know you?

Where did you see any kind of attack in that post? It escapes me.

You haven't ticked off the world Irishraider, Walter Breen has.
IMO, the problem is that he was a brilliant researcher some would say he was a genius. At the same time he was a degenerate of the lowest order. And people seem to have a hard time separating the two. He's also the black sheep that will always be there when it comes to promoting the public image of coin collecting which is something else that infuriates people. Whether we like it or not Breen is always going to be with us, the good, bad, and totally ugly and we just have live with it. He's the crazy uncle up the attic.
He's become a rather "hairy" subject.
"...Snaggy, shaggy, ratsy, matsy Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining Gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen Knotted polka-dotted, twisted beaded braided Powdered, flowered and confettied Bangled, tangled, spangled and spaghettied...!"

I do not admire or wish to be like this awful person. He is one of the biggest wastes of an excellent mind in my opinion. What a perverted man.

Irish..... I wasn't trying to attack, or one up anyone. I just have doubts about the accuracy of a great many Internet sites.

Don't worry Steve, no harm done, I am just an old cranky sot. I got over it pretty quick when Dave smacked me upside the head. All is good.
