My friend was held in a Russian prison last year for several months for "smuggling cultural artifacts." Trumped up charges to try and get a bribe out of him. The coins were not very old and are easily obtainable and I am sure most of us have them in our collection. He was finally released when a U.S. Senator intervened on his behalf.
On the way home he had several layovers in European airports. Some that lasted over night. They gave him a couple a bucks a day to get food and drink. He found out that the vending machines gave out the different coins so he went around to each of the machines in the airport and got MS copies of different euros after cycling through hundreds of coins in the machines. What else are you going to do when you can't sleep?

I almost wish I hadn't read this. There are two vending machines outside my office door, less than 30 feet away.  |

The break room that I can see from where I sit has a vending machine and a machine that converts change or currency to dollar coins (the vending machine and soda machines accept dollar coins). The company that fills them usually comes during business hours as well. I could time my cycles around his restocks.
However, If I were a roll searcher I'd be much more excited at the opportunity to pull rolls that haven't been in circulation for years. Searching my co-workers' pocket change isn't as inviting. xD

Where I work we are moving into a much larger warehouse/office in two months, I have convinced my boss that with 150+ employees he really need to have a soda machine as well as a candy vending machine (I reasoned with the profit potential) so I am looking forward to seeing what we will be able to get. If I know my boss as well as I think I do then it will be my job to empty out the change and roll them to go to the bank, I am kinda excited about the prospects.

That would be the problem if I only had one machine. I work in a foundry with 250 employees. We have 9 machines that get serviced weekly. I ran another $10 of nickels through the machines today converting them to quarters. I put $2 each through 5 machines. Only one got to the point of dropping coins into the overflow. (You can tell by the noise the coin makes.) I am going to drop the middle step of converting to dimes though. Too much time feeding the machine. |

A fried of mine has a vending machine buisness. He is also a coin collector. His entire family goes through all the coins that are scheduled to be put into those machines. Also, people that do what is mentioned here becomes a problem for his company as they have to service those machines constantly. Something to think about when doing this vending machine game.

Two of the Jefferson nickels in my circulation/roll hunting set actually came from a vending machine. I was cycling through the nickels in a machine at the place my father works, and I ended up with a BU 1968S with really nice orange-purplish toning, and a 1950 plain that grades EF. |

@ just carl: I'm pretty sure that the machines in my company get enough volume that my coin cycling won't cause the vender any problem. He may have more nickels to haul away but the machines will stay in service. To check my theory I did another experiment last week.
On Monday morning, after the guy serviced the machines, I ran nickels through one machine until it ran out of quarters. It had $18 of quarters in the machine. I don't think he fills the tubes to the top though because the first $0.50 or so of nickels when into the tubes not the overflow. Then I went on a business trip and returned on Friday afternoon. I ran another $2 of nickels through the machine with no problems. I asked a co-worker if they had any problems with the machine and he said no.

I think I might try the Vending Machine Route. Any suggestions. We have about 10 Pepsi Machines at the Flea Market. Is it possible to insert a Paper Dollar and get a Dollar in Change. I have a Bubble Gum 25 cent machine at my spot and haven't got anything in a long time ,used to get a few Canadian Quarter. I think I will use them at Audi ( grocery store for buggy rental ) Then when I return the buggy I will get a U. S. Quarter back in change.

The old machines require me to make a purchase once a dollar bill is inserted. The new machines will return my dollar bill. The new machines will also convert $1 in coins to a dollar bill. |
