Does anyone ever fall for this sort of stuff?

I cant imagine anyone that actually has 250k would be silly enough to fall for this. He/She would probably get the occasional hit at say $250. IMO

I like this statement:

I have asked a few coin dealer what value for this quarter and I was told that this coin has no value at this time.

It's a struck through coin and a well circulated one at that. Worth a few bucks at best but not all that collectible because of the wear. I also like the comment that it would not make sense to show the obverse (where the missing MM would be) because we wouldn't be able to tell it from pre 1999 coins, which are decidedly different. Moving the MM to the obverse was far from the only change to that face of the quarter. The guy wants a quarter of a million for a coin that he can't even deliver decent images of. Why don't coins on ebay have pics like those on Heritage and other large coin auction sites? Those sites offer images that you can actually grade from.

I don't think this coin exists. Those look like blurry, out-of-focus Bigfoot images. ;-)

Wow! Asking $250,000.00 makes it not even worth contemplating if it is real or not IMHO but at least he says you can view it in person at his bank first and if not satisfied he will give a full refund... Riiiggghht..... Totally legit

I would like to think ebay would put some sort of restrictions on carrying such high-priced auctions. I.e., you have to be pre-approved to do so or must get approval on an item-by-item basis (in this case, not allowing due to lack of good pictures or any other credible evidence to support the opening bid and buy-it-now price).

IMO ebay loses credibility by allowing these kinds of auctions and possibly opens themselves up for litigation.

I sure don't want ebay (or anyone else) sticking there nose in my asking prices. That would be a revolt of a magnitude ebay has never seen.

Yes, it would have to be approached carefully. I don't suppose you or anyone else on CCF would post such obvious BS though.

Honestly I get a kick out of these ridiculous auctions, but seems like a liability for ebay. Whatever. I suppose I don't really care as long as no one falls for them.

I have not looked at the auction yet but I am going to make a guess that it is a New Hampshire. They are well known for having missing mintmarks due to Grease Filled Dies.

OK checked the auction, NH Nailed it!

Can't blame a guy for trying...

There was a guy trying to sell South Texas Snow on ebay in 2005. I'm pretty sure it didn't sell but people have bought crazier things for lots of money.

Welcome, AthenaWho.

Normally I don't care about these outrageous listings, but this one rubs me the wrong way. And I certainly can blame a guy for being a jackwagon for a preposterous listing like this.

So I just got an email from ebay tonight (as I'm sure others of you did as well) stating:

Quote:

The ebay marketplace for coin collecting is vibrant. Buyers and sellers alike enjoy access to both a great selection and a highly engaged community. Customers within the Coins & Paper Money category have told us that the ability to shop and sell confidently on ebay is an important factor for them.

Based on this feedback, and after closely reviewing the coin experience on ebay, we have decided to update ebay's Stamps, currency, and coins policy to disallow replica coin listings on ebay.com, effective February 20. Any replica coin listings on ebay on February 20 will be allowed to end normally.

This update reflects standards across the coin industry and helps ensure compliance with applicable laws that require replica coins to be permanently marked with the word "copy." We also expect that this update will increase marketplace confidence by letting our community know that coin listings on ebay are authentic, so they'll receive the most positive ebay experience possible.

As always, thank you for selling on ebay.

Sincerely,

The ebay Seller Team

Perhaps this is a first step towards doing away with some of these insane listings. One can hope. Of course, that would simultaneously eliminate about 25% of the threads here in CCF...

Or maybe they'll charge a fee for very large opening bids.

Whatever. I know, I know...no one's forcing anyone to buy... but IMO this is far worse than even the HSN coin nonsense that everyone gripes about.

Sorry, end of rant. Done and bed time.

That policy should just about eliminate any more listings of 1895 Morgans. Maybe a few well circulated O and S coins are legit but the circulated looking Philadelphia examples are virtually all counterfeit, er, copies. Too bad that those "old Chinese silver bullion" slabs are not coins. Of course if PCGS can get away with saying that "First Strike" means "shipped in the first month" then it might be OK to say "old Chinese silver bullion" really means "modern pot metal".
