Wow are they really that expensive!

A few months ago I went to my first local coin fair with my own table, as I now have heap of coins that are spares.

Im not a coin dealer and everyone was like awww its nice to see a nice young lady collecting coins. And yes I was the youngest person there

I had a nice lady who looked around and only came up to me and showed me a cute little gold coin, it was a half sovereign. I didn't have my coin book with me but I said in gold it would be at least $100 - $150 to which she replied do you want to buy it, I laughed as I almost fell over with surprise and said sorry that's out of my budget, it was the first gold coin my hands had ever touched, and as soon as I had finish the sentence and handed to coin back to her it was quickly wrapped away and she disappeared into the distance.

Next time there is a local coin fair, I think I will be taking some money along and become a coin buyer at the fair, I was surprised what different coins people want to show you and talk about. I think people liked me there because I was talking to a guy who had asked all the coin people what they would pay for coins, and I gave the fairest price for coins. There was a guy who wanted to sell 1kg of half pennies and all the other people had said $5 and I said $15 because I didn't have any and it's a good way to get started with half pennies, he told me that the other guys were being cheap, and for the rest of the day people came to me for pricing.

I once had an Australian gold type set with an Adelaide Pound. Sold decades ago, as part of a larger collection with ancients (also with gold) to raise a deposit for my first house.

These days, my sovereign collection is a little weird. Includes:
George V1 1937 proof five Pounds
George v1 1937 proof two pounds
South Africa 1952 George V1 One Pound
Sydney Mint Sovereign 1866.

World gold in the period 1934 to 1960 fascinates me because by 1934, very little gold was struck. My collecting interests are very obtuse.

Also currently have 5 or 6 examples of ancient gold (again).

I would love to get hold of a gold thrymsa of the Dark Ages! I note that the Chinese have not tried to fake these yet! Even so, If I were to acqire one of these, it would have to come from a dealer with an internationally recognised reputation. I may have to wait beyond the extent of my life to obtain one.

I was in the same position as you this time last year. The cheapest you could probably get an Australian sovereign would be about $380. Personally, I would go for a Sydney mint sovereign because its so iconic and uniquely Australian. You could probably pick one up a nice one in fine for around $450. This is what I ended up going with, and I got an 1870 in aVf for $425.

If you are condition conscience, then you could probably get a St George sovereign in AU and above for the same money. If you are going to buy a soverign, dont buy something too cheap and nasty, try putting in a little bit more cash to get something nice (a really nasty sovereign would probably go for $380, but you could get something really nice for an extra 50 or so bucks).

The premiun on a 1916s half sovereign in this condition should be around $60.
Add that to the current gold melt value.

melt value in half soverigns

So this on is worth about $265 with todays gold price.
thats $54 extra.
I have no afilliation with this seller whatsoever, It looks like a realy nice coin and I would have bought it myself but I have spent a heap of my play money on Aussie decimal coins this week and have made a bid on Ugly's Canadian 50 cent coins.
So that's me done for the week.
Next week is a whole new ball game

Have you considered going to a dealer as opposed to buying online - ebay can be very overpriced when it comes to coins. If you are in Sydney, there are a few places I could recommend.

Ok sel so that one should be around 260- 270? If any of you see a cheap decent one could you link me? As long as you guys dont want it of course :)

I'm from Geelong, Victoria enoilgam. There was a nice man who ran a coin shop but he closed over the last few years. When I was a kid id take my 15 dollars a week and he would get out a big box of cheap world coins. All of them ranging between 1800-2000. Lots of old british pennys which I thought were amazing with Queen victoria on them because I didnt even know she existed haha. I used to see old roman silver coins for $90, but they were always way over my budget. Gold coins werent considered because they were just too expensive for me

At the time of this post, the spot gold price is AU$ 1,590. That gives actual gold value in a half sovereign of AU$187. Add $60 to that, and you get around $250, which would be my personal price guide if I was looking for a choice Unc. 1916s Half Sovereign myself.

Actually I am looking for a British Half Sovereign in the period 1825 to 1855, before the opening of the Sydney Mint. Sterling currency was firmly established in Australia in 1825, when a large supply of freshly minted coin from The Royal Mint was landed in Sydney. I don't think there were any gold coins in this shipment, but 1825 is the start date that I have selected anyway.

An early Victorian Half Sovereign in good EF came up at auction a couple of years ago with a reserve of $250, estimate $350, which I thought was a bit low, but it encouraged a low bid from me. I missed out, and I am still looking.

British coins of the period 1825 to 1855 are an integral part of Australian coinage history, which is most often ignored by Australian collectors. That is why I have an interest in this period. As I said in a previous post, I am an obtuse collector.

Why am I currently looking for Half sovereigns, rather than Sovereigns?
The sovereign was almost exclusively minted to pay for imports into Australia.
The Half Sovereign was the coin issued to the public for circulation. That is why Australian minted sovereigns were made in much larger numbers, and why Half Sovereigns are more often found with extensive wear.

It also explains why Sydney Mint Half Sovereigns are so pricey in better grades.

How about this? I could possibly get him lower. What are your opinions on international sellers?

This coin should fairly be had at bullion value + 10 to 15 percent. That means around AU$410 to AU$430, premium included.
I notice that the 'Buy it now' price is GBP 319, which works out at around AU$465.
Apparently, a British seller.
