The lowest I would go on this is AU59 and I am still not convinced it's not MS. Another dandy!

Quote: vf/xf WOW! I will admit that I don't know this series well enough to really grade these things but I would have never thought this thing would ever get a VF grade from anyone. Is there different grading scales for Seated coins than there are for Morgans like the EAC grading standards for Large Cent coins? I looked at photograde and both of the Seated quarters I posted look better than the VF-35, XF-40 coins they show on there and I am guessing that is PCGS standards, that is why I ask if there is a different standard for Seated coinage. If these are just VF/XF coins I may need to start looking for upgrades and just put these back in with his other coins I have (I will always keep them as they were my grandfathers) as I have been trying to keep the Dansco album coins at AU-50 minimum

Luster looks incomplete, so I will vote AU-58. Beautiful quarter!

I'll echo that no way this is even as low as 45 or 50, full luster. I don't see any outright wear, but some minor sliding around which 'nets' to MS-62 in my opinion.

AU-50/53 I see breaks in the luster on the obverse fields, a sign of light handling, but that could be the lighting too. I don't see this as an MS coin, but it's not far off.
When it was photographed was it in any kind of holder?

no it wasn't in any holder. I know my lighting isn't the best (used just one desk lamp) but as soon as I can get to Charlotte I am going to go to the only ikea around me and get me two of those led lights everyone seems to like so much

Bryan . . I don't think you need to think of upgrading this beauty. I'm still learning the grading part of this hobby, and I will be for quite some time, bit I'm in the camp of the high AU to low MS opinions. This is definitely worthy of residing in your Dansco.

The fact that there are luster bands on the 10:00-4:00 axis tells me that 1) your photo setup is capable of showing luster, and 2) the coin is at least in AU territory. Since the luster is strong in the protected areas next to the rim but fades out in the open areas, I think the coin has seen light circulation. I also see a bit of rub on Liberty's right thigh. The strike is not as crisp as your 1862 quarter. I'd give this one an AU-55.

I figured actually that the coin was impaired by an old wipe (which was why the luster was impaired in certain areas) but has never circulated, there doesn't look to be any rub to me and that might just be lighting. I 'netted' it to MS-62 based on that. It doesn't look like a typical AU-55 to me.

So by Olympic grading standards, we throw out the high and the low and this one comes in at AU-58, well above your album threshold. Your grandfather did this coin thing quite well.
BTW, I know I've read a few posts on this board that implied/said Seated Liberty grading standards can be a bit soft, definitely not the other way around. By that they meant the grades come back a bit higher than perhaps absolute strict adherence to grading criteria would yield. I don't have enough experience with the series validate that though.

I'd say solid for AU-55. I'd go higher if there was more luster visible. No way is this VF/XF imo, not even close.
